USCCB - Living the Gospel of Life: A Challenge to American Catholics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
We live the Gospel of Life when we live in solidarity with the poor of the world, standing up for their lives and dignity.
We believe that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is a "Gospel of life." It invites all persons and societies to a new life lived abundantly in respect for human dignity.
The Gospel of Life must be proclaimed, and human life defended, in all places and all times.

frontline: john paul II - the millennial pope: evangelium vitae | PBS
After all, life on earth is not an "ultimate" but a "penultimate" reality; even so, it remains a sacred reality entrusted to us, to be preserved with a sense of responsibility and brought to perfection in love and in the gift of ourselves to God and to our brothers and sisters.
The Church knows that this Gospel of life, which she has received from her Lord,1 has a profound and persuasive echo in the heart of every person--believer and non-believer alike--because it marvellously fulfils all the heart's expectations while infinitely surpassing them.
The Gospel of God's love for man, the Gospel of the dignity of the person and the Gospel of life are a single and indivisible Gospel.

Knights of Columbus - Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life) - Introduction
In truth, he is referring to that "new" and "eternal" life which consists in communion with the Father, to which every person is freely called in the Son by the power of the Sanctifying Spirit.
Man is called to a fullness of life which far exceeds the dimensions of his earthly existence, because it consists in sharing the very life of God.
Life in time, in fact, is the fundamental condition, the initial stage and an integral part of the entire unified process of human existence.

Evangelium Vitae -- Gospel of Life -- Part 1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Life's contradictions and risks were fully accepted by Jesus: "though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich" (2 Cor 8:9).
Human life and death are thus in the hands of God, in his power: "In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind", exclaims Job (12:10).
In fact, it is altogether impossible for life to remain authentic and complete once it is detached from the good; and the good, in its turn, is essentially bound to the commandments of the Lord, that is, to the "law of life" (Sir 17:11).

THE VATICAN'S SUMMARY OF "EVANGELIUM VITAE"
While realistically countering unprecedented threats to life and the spread of a "culture of death," the primary intention of the papal document is to proclaim the good news of the value and dignity of each human life, of its grandeur and worth, also in its temporal phase.
The cause of life is in fact at the same time the cause of the Gospel and the cause of man, the cause entrusted to the church.
That life is the object of God's tender and intense love, especially in the poor, the weak and the defenseless: "Truly great must be the value of human life if the Son of God has taken it up and made it the instrument of the salvation of humanity!"(No. 33).

Reluctant Saint: The Life of Francis of Assisi
Their life was extremely ascetic, though such practises were apparently not prescribed by the first rule which Francis gave them (probably as early as 1209), which seems to have been nothing more than a collection of Scriptural passages emphasizing the duty of poverty.
It was not, however, a life of idle mendicancy on which the brothers entered when they set out in 1210 with the papal approbation, but one of diligent labor.

Our historical moment is marked by mortal conflict between the "culture of death" and the "culture of life." While we have God's word that life will ultimately prevail, an uncompromisingly honest reading of the signs of the times suggests that the culture of death is gaining the upper hand.

In general terms, Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), which was issued by John Paul II last March, is an analysis of the "culture of death" and an exhortation to promote the "culture of life." The obligatory force of a pastoral analysis and exhortation of this type is difficult to pin down.
Since it is always morally wrong to destroy innocent human life, persons who are ordered to do so by doctors or state officials have a duty to object in conscience and to refuse compliance.
The first and most fundamental human right is the right to life, or, to be more precise, the right of an innocent person not to be deliberately killed, whether by public authority or private license.

Stem Cell Reality Check #4 Myth: "Human life begins in the womb, not the Petri dish" Reality: Actually, it usually begins in the fallopian tube, but it can also begin in a Petri dish.
In contrast, embryonic stem cell research involves the destruction of one human life, whether conceived through in vitro fertilization or cloning, in an attempt to restore another's life.
If this were to happen, tax dollars would support the destruction of human embryonic life in order to restore the health of another.
