  The Gospel of Nicodemus
And Nicodemus received him into his house and made a great feast, and called Annas and Caiaphas and the elders and the priests and the Levites unto his house.
And Nicodemus opened his mouth and said unto Joseph: Father, thou knowest that the reverend doctors and the priests and the Levites seek to learn a matter of thee.
And Nicodemus with Joseph comforted Annas and Caiaphas and the priests and the Levites, saying: Rise up and stand on your feet and taste bread and strengthen your souls, for tomorrow is the sabbath of the Lord.

Nicodemus (Greek: Νικόδημος) was a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin, who showed favor to Jesus.

Apocryphal Gospels (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia) :: Bible Tools
The undoubted early date of this gospel, the character of most of its not very numerous quotations, the respect with which it is uniformly mentioned by early writers, and the esteem in which it is at present held by scholars in general, entitle the Gospel according to the Hebrews to special notice.
A Gospel of Barnabas and Gospel of Bartholomew are condemned in the decree of Pope Gelasius.
In all of the gospels of this class it is noteworthy that considering the desire of the writers of non-canonical gospels to multiply miracles, no notice is taken of the period in the life of Christ that intervened between his twelfth year and his thirtieth.

 Nicodemus
Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews.
But Christ and the apostles didn't portray the gospel as an invitation to the unbeliever, but as the means by which the Spirit creates faith in the hearts of the elect, and as the power of God unto salvation for those who do believe.
Jesus' patient explanation of the gospel to Nicodemus, then, is further evidence for, not against, the conclusion that he was already born again, if very newly.

There, assisted by Nicodemus, he took the body and wrapped it in the fine linen, sprinkling it with the myrrh and aloes which Nicodemus had brought (John 19:39).
Joseph is also referenced in apocryphal and non-canonical accounts such as the Acts of Pilate given the medieval title "Gospel of Nicodemus" and "The Narrative of Joseph".
According to the Gospel of Nicodemus, Joseph testified to the Jewish elders, and specifically to Chief priest Caiaphas and Annas that Jesus had risen from the dead and ascended to heaven and he indicated that others were raised from the dead at the resurrection of Christ (repeating Matt 27:52-53).

Matthew Z. Heintzelman - Dissertation Summary
It was his version of the Gospel of Nicodemus (and the description of the trial of Jesus in the Acts of Pilate) which was to be the most popular in the later Middle Ages.
The subsequent treatments of the Acts of Pilate/Gospel of Nicodemus in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries (Heinrich von München's Weltchronik, Die Neue Ee, numerous translations) enhanced the text's authority as an eyewitness report of the events surrounding the trial of Jesus.
Nicodemus was no longer the main witness to the trial, but his account was still considered useful background reading.

from jesus to christ: the story of the storytellers: the gospel of john
That is, the Gospel of John constructs the speeches of Jesus in an effort to interpret traditional sayings of Jesus.
Nicodemus comes to Jesus and recognizes he is a great teacher, he's come from God, and Jesus now tells him something that is, in fact, the quotation of a traditional baptismal saying.
I mean, in one sense, if we remove the Gospel of John from the Christian canon, if we didn't have it right next to Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and instead, if we put the gospel of John next to the Dead Sea Scroll library, we'd see the sorts of issues that Jews fight about forever.

Yet, while little is written about Joseph in the Gospels themselves, he was a popular figure in both apocryphal (non-canonical) accounts ("Gospel of Nicodemus", "The Narrative of Joseph"), and in numerous medieval Arthurian epics, including Mallory's "Le Morte D'Arthur", and Robert de Boron's "Joseph d'Arimathie".
Certainly, the Gospels identify Joseph as a disciple (although not apostle) of Christ, and he is also identified as having taken down the body of Christ from the cross, and preparing it for burial.
While he appears to be a fairly minor player in the canonical Gospels, he, not Mary, Mother of Jesus, not Mary Magdalen, and not any of the apostles, is entrusted with the act of taking Jesus down from the cross, respectfully preparing him for burial, and donating a tomb for the body.
