 Another Gospel Truth
John's Gospel differs materially from the other three on some important issues, and this is one of them; to Mark and his adapters, Matthew and Luke, Jesus was not a god but a messiah (''christos'' in Greek) in the Jewish tradition -- a human being.
The disciple Thomas speaks only in John's Gospel, and he is rather coolly presented, said not to have been present with the other disciples when Jesus appeared to them after the Resurrection, and condemned for all time to be the one who doubted.

The Gospel of Truth does not insist that there is no world; it insists there is no world 'out there.' The world within the individual mind, derived from the world within the mind and thought of the Father, exists as it has always existed.
The Gospel of Truth is written from both perspectives; the movement "from multiplicity to unity" (25:13-15) that the text advocates would enable human beings to view themselves from both perspectives.
The Gospel of Truth understood from the perspective of an individual may be essentially autobiographical; it is the story of the individual as a pleroma devolving into an isolated person in the material world under the influence of "external" matter.

The new covenant truth was an essential element of the 1888 message, and even today lifts a load of doubt and despair from many heavy hearts.
The message the world needs to hear is the truth of righteousness by faith in the light of the cleansing of the sanctuary—"the third angel's message in verity." Faith is understood in its true biblical sense—a heart appreciation of the agape of Christ.
It forms the essential element of truth that will yet lighten the earth with the glory of a final, fully developed presentation of "the everlasting gospel" of Revelation 14 and 18.

Of the four Gospels, the author's preference is clearly for Matthew and John, although there is at least one distinct allusion to Luke; there does not appear to be any evidence for knowledge of Mark.
Indeed their audacity has gone so far that they entitle their recent composition the Gospel of Truth, though it agrees in nothing with the Gospels of the apostles, and so no Gospel of theirs is free from blasphemy.

STANFORD Magazine: January/February 2004 > Feature Story > The Gospel Truth
For centuries, all that was known about these so-called Gnostic gospels came from their detractors, the fourth-century bishops who had denounced them as heretical works in the process of formalizing the beliefs of the Nicene Creed and ordaining the biblical canon.
Pagels says the Gnostic gospels had acquired a long-standing bad name among scholars of the early church, thanks to a five-volume polemic by the bishop who was the primary architect of the biblical canon.
The author of the Gospel of Philip, for example, was denounced by church fathers for suggesting that the virgin birth was not simply something that had happened once to Jesus, but that it could happen to anyone who was baptized.

Like the original editors, Dr. Grobel espouses the view that Gnosticism, or at least the gonosis of the Gospel of Truth, is a kind of existentialism.
The fact that such a characteristic feature of the Valentinian school as the doctrine of the thirty eons should not explicitly be stated in this hymn can therefore hardly be interpreted as indicating a relatively early stage of this type of Gnosticism.
But that goal is not interpreted in the manner of Socratic-Platonic philosophy, according, to which the individual finds all truth in himself self, if only he makes an effort to overcome his congenital ignorance.

Scholars are divided as to whether the Nag Hammadi Gospel of Truth (for text see [Robinson]) derives from Valentinus.
Despite its title, this work is not a gospel of the sort found in the New Testament, since it does not offer a continuous narration of the deeds, teachings, passion, and resurrection of Jesus.
The Gospel of Truth's combination of literary and conceptual sophistication with genuine religious feeling suggests much better than the rather dry accounts of Gnostic systems in the heresiologists why the teaching of Valentinus and his school had such an appeal for many Christians of the 2nd century.
