Gossan is a term used to indicate the geologic feature of the ore body where gold and silver are located.
Sutherland said the gossan tailings dam is part of the big commitment of the TVI to protect the environment it explores.
The construction of the gossan tailings dam commenced in April 2005 reaching its maximum height of 42 meters on April 2, 2006.

Gossan is especially obvious at the surface in arid and semi-arid regions, often forming bold outcrops or “iron blowouts.”
Massive dark brown to fl gossan, sometimes iridescent, is formed by the leaching of pyrite.
Gossan that forms over a porphyry copper deposit, or a massive sulfide deposit, can be sizable in area.

A Geological Visit to the Virginia Copper Region - 1859   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The iron ore, or gossan, on the Iron Ridge, 5 miles north-east of this place, was first discovered in the year 1786, by the persons who subsequently erected iron works on chestnut creek, with a view to the manufacture of bar iron from it.
This gossan outcrop is 60 feet wide, and serves to indicate great width in the copper vein, which, on running in the tunnels, was found to be the case.
The heavy outcrops of gossan existing here had led to their use, in former years, for supplying an iron furnace and forge in their vicinity; but the same objection being had to the metal, that it would not weld, caused them to be abandoned.

In this lode, the red oxyd of copper was accompanied occasionally by vitreous copper ore, fl oxyd of copper, arseniate of copper, arsenical pyrites, quartz, and fluate of lime.
At this depth one part of the vein consisted only of gossan, and was six feet in width, forty fathoms from which it narrowed to three feet, and was there composed of yellow copper ore and quartz.

Abstract: Silver in gossan ore tailings from conventional cyanidation is present in arsenical potassium jarosite and beudantite.
The decomposition of arsenical potassium jarosite between 100-250 °C in saturated lime is characterized by the total solubilization of potassium and the formation of a hydroxyarsenate of iron, lead and calcium.
Silver can be recovered from gossan ore tailings by alkaline decomposition at 180 °C for 30 minutes and subsequent cyanidation at room temperature.
