Genome evolution in Gossypium   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-30)
Therefore, it is of interest to determine the identity of the non-genic DNA that contribute to genome size variation, the mechanisms by which this variation arises, and their relevance to organismal fitness and evolution.
Although all diploid members of the cotton genus (Gossypium) have a haploid complement of 13 chromosomes, genome sizes range approximately 3-fold, from 885 Mbp to 2570Mbp per 1C nucleus.
Whole genome shotgun libraries were constructed from sheared DNA for three members of Gossypium that vary in genome size from 880Mb to 2460Mb pg (2C), and one outgroup species, Gossypioides kirkii (550Mb).

ARS | Publication request: Molecular Characterization of Gossypium Germplasm
Prior characterization of the Gossypium accessions is focused on distinguishing among them and not one of identifying and eliminating redundancy.
DNA profiles of 280 Gossypium accessions were generated with automated genetic analyzers, and genetic markers were generated with automated genetic analyzers, and genetic markers were capable of detecting polymorphism among G. hirsutum accessions.
The resulting unique Gossypium accessions will be subjected to further characterization with additional 100 DNA markers selected for the best ability to describe the germplasm.

 Gossypium tomentosum
Gossypium tomentosum, also known as Hawaiian cotton, is endemic to dry and rocky coastal areas of the Hawaiian Islands.
Though Gossypium tomentosum is closely related to the plant used for commercial cotton production, the fibers on its seeds have not actually been used to produce cotton on a large scale.
However, Hawaiian cotton has been important for its use in research and breeding programs aimed at producing disease resistance in commercial cotton.
