Heavy metal music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Whereas a painting is experienced visually, a symphony experienced audibly, a heavy metal band's "image" and the common theme that binds all their music is expressed in the artwork on the album, the set of the stage, the tone of the lyrics, in addition to the sound of the music.
Ultimately, "pure" heavy metal would position itself at the periphery of pop culture, never quite at centre, and metal denizens contend that the move towards the centre was a commercialism that compromised both the artistic integrity of the form and the opportunity for messages to be taken seriously.
Metal's profound influence on contemporary popular music is again seen in its effect on several bands in the garage rock revival set of the early 21st century.

Thrash metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The origins of thrash metal are generally traced to the late 1970s and early 1980s, when a number of heavy metal bands began incorporating speed metal's extreme speed into traditional metal melody and riffs.
The band Metal Church recorded a few rehearsals in 1980-81, which were similar to the early Metallica and Overkill efforts, though not quite as thrashy.
Soon, post-thrash metal bands with a newer sound would continue the more innovative direction, whilst those that played classic thrash metal were seen as throw-backs, though the 1990s had some excellent thrash metal, for example Iced Earth's Night of the Stormrider (1992), which combined power-metal and thrash metal.

Scandinavian death metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many bands that fall under this category are associated with the melodic death metal movement, thus giving Scandinavian death metal a much different sound than other variations of death metal.
The Swedish and Finnish bands, inspired by Bathory and other 1980s thrash metal bands, were more popular than the Norwegian bands, who were influenced strongly by fl metal and included keyboards and chaotic riffs.
Later, the Gothenburg sound was pioneered by bands such as At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, and In Flames.

Melodic death metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Death and Morbid Angel, often considered the "godfathers" of death metal, are primary influences on the genre, but its progenators are still a mystery.
It is not certain what band originally started the Gothenburg sound, but it is widely accepted that In Flames, At The Gates and Dark Tranquillity are three major popularizers of the Gothenburg sound, and some of the only widely known bands to practice it.
Nearly all melodic death metal bands are from the Northern Europe region, especially from Sweden and Finland.

List of heavy metal genres - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The genre has its origins in early thrash/speed metal and is often (but not always) characterised by Satanic or occult lyrical themes, usually 'screamed' or rasped (lower pitched and high-pithed alike) out rather than sung.
New wave of British heavy metal -- Often abbreviated as NWOBHM, the term is used to describe British heavy metal artists that emerged in the late 1970s/early 1980s in the wake of the 'original wave' of British traditional metal artists.
Speed metal has its origins in the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal with bands such as Iron Maiden, Raven, Venom and Judas Priest often combining heavy metal with the speed of punk rock.

Also, the live version of "Tyrant" on 1979's Unleashed in the East is very close to thrash metal, combining new drummer Les Binks's uptempo delivery with a more distorted guitar sound than the 1976 studio version (from the classic Sad Wings of Destiny album).
Their We Are The Dead took a more Black Sabbath oriented direction, resulting in a thrash metal form that was not quite as fast as that of Metallica but had similar riff ideas.
Some bands combined speed metal and thrash metal, like the aforementioned Megadeth, and also Helstar, Testament, and Heathen were known for their flashy lead guitar work.

New Wave of British Heavy Metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) emerged in the late 1970s, in part a reaction to the decline (or over-popularity, and therefore 'untouchable' status) of traditional heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.
NWOBHM suffered the same fate as many other musical movements; the majority of its leading lights were unable to follow up their initial successes and the superstars moved further away from the genre towards mainstream hard rock.
By the middle and end of the 1980s, America had become the epicenter of heavy metal, most notably with Van Halen, and later with Guns N' Roses and Metallica.

It is extreme metal that you can groove to, with punk and hard core influences and plenty of brutal technicality.
Michael Williams provides higher-end harsh vocals that are as fl metal as they are metalcore, lower growls that approach the realm of death metal, and enough screams and yells and even clean vocals to fill the gaps between the two.

Scandinavian death metal describes a particular style of death metal that emerged from Finland and Sweden in the late 80's.

Melo-death is mainly power metal with harsh vocals or wannabe thrash (the kind with one thrash riff for an entire song with no changing up whatsoever).
Gothenburg is the part of Sweden that was basically the centre of the development of melodic death.
Gothenburg in general is disliked by people simply because it is overdone, and rather than progressing (within or without the genre), most Gothenburg bands choose to rehash the same structures, harmonies, and chord progressions, album after album.

Their competency as songwriters and musicians is not doubted, neither is their album, which is nine tracks of excellent melodic death metal.
Nonetheless, it is easy to see that the trend of reproduction is fully embedded here and this may hinder the band's legitamacy somewhat in the long run if they fail to develop a sound they can call their own.

Perhaps a more accurate statement would be, "We studied current trends in semi-underground metal bands trying to make it big, and after altering a sound that may have been original at one time, we found it easier to copy the other guys."
In sum, this band sounds like it's trying really hard to emulate the Gothenburg sound--with the exception that they do not growl at all--but it's not really working.

This band, featuring New York singer/songwriter Katherine Burke on all instruments, vocals, and drum programming, is extremely reminiscent (one could say derivative) of Gothenburg death metal such as At The Gates and older Soilwork, as well as melodic fl metal like Cradle of Filth.
The vocals are some of the best female vocals I've heard in all of metal; the clean singing was average, but the harsh vocals are completely balls out (assuming a female can be said to do something balls out).
Overall, this demo is a pretty admirable effort, despite the fact that it clashed with my personal tastes quite a bit; but anyone into Gothenburg metal or "wanky" fl metal will dig this 100%.

Some may hear Norwegian Black Metal rubbing off on the guitar chords and riffs in places on the new album, or imagine EMPEROR playing similarly to these parts on one of their last two records.
The tone of the record is interesting, as mainly it is a metal recording, but the guitar sound and the vocal mix don't have as much "bite" or "edge" as some other contemporary metal records.
I think it is wrong to sort of underrate metallers, because people into heavy music tend to be the most open minded knowers of music there is, and in that sense I’d rather that metal people get this than any indie kid or something.

I'm told the "Swedish Death Metal sound" pretty much lives in Gothenburg, so anything you listen to that was done in or around Gothenburg should give you some idea.
Gothenburg was quick to follow suit, with bands like At The Gates starting to record in their hometown around the mid nineties(they had also previously worked at Sunlight).

That's interesting that you brought up Gothenburg, because many people in the metal world saw you guys and At the Gates as the leaders of that scene, as its foremost innovators.
