Gothic language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gothic is rich in fricative consonants (although many of them may have been approximants, it's hard to separate the two) derived by the processes described in Grimm's law and Verner's law and characteristic of Germanic languages.
Gothic is unusual among Germanic languages in having a [z] phoneme which is not derived from an [r] through rhotacization.
Gothic had nominative, accusative, genitive and dative cases, as well as vestiges of a vocative case that was sometimes identical to the nominative and sometimes to the accusative.

Gothic rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The earliest Gothic bands were Bauhaus (whose song "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is accurately said to beget the Gothic Scene), The Cure, and Siouxsie and the Banshees, although none of these bands were initially at all involved in a music that could be accurately described as Gothic Rock.
This is because "gothic" started out as a label and these groups labeled as such were part of the greater punk /post punk/ new wave scene.
Many fans of early gothic rock are embracing a Death rock revival, as a return to the original music and fashions of the first generation of goth.

 ECHO VI/1: Bain 1
The sound of Gothic Voices simultaneously encapsulates and creates the “early music” vocal style that emerged in the early 80s, a style easily recognized in “O Euchari” by its pure sound and lack of vibrato, which contrasts greatly with the church choir from Aachen.
Gothic Voices not only legitimized Hildegard’s music with their credentials and professional sound, but through several key aspects of their performances they strongly contributed to the image of Hildegard as an ecstatic song-writer, the creator of glorious melodies, far exceeding in range and depth the Gregorian chant repertory.
With their professional voices, their solo style and intimate portrayals of the songs, as well as their rapid tempo and exploitation of the female vocal register, Gothic Voices’ high caliber performances established a secure place in the repertory for Hildegard’s music, for musicologists and general audiences alike.

Russian Gothic Page - GOTHIC FAQ
Wherever "gothic music" is used, it denotes the gothic music genre as a such - the one that is considered a part of the alternative music in whole and includes wildly different subgenres, such as gothic rock, gothic ambient, darkwave, and others.
Gothic rock originated in British night clubs that considered themself alternative and generally underground; the most famous of these was "Batcave", where almost all founders of gothic rock held their concerts.
Gothic subculture appears to be the most diverse of the existing subcultures; it is impossible to imagine, say, a head-banger not listening to metal bands, for this is the only thing that makes him a head-banger.

 Gothic Voices: Program
Gothic Voices, founded by Christopher Page in 1980, is now established as one of the world's leading Medieval ensembles.
Gothic Voices has three times been a winner of the Gramophone Early Music (Medieval and Renaissance) Award: Feather on the Breath of God, (1983), The Service of Venus and Mars (1988), and A Song for Francesca (1989).
In this program, Gothic Voices returns to its roots some fifteen years after the release of its world-renowned recording “A Feather on the Breath of God”, (a selection of Hildegard’s more extended sequences and hymns), and attempts to show her achievement against the background of polyphony and plainchant of her era from elsewhere in Europe.

American Passages - Unit 6. Gothic Undercurrents: Instructor Overview
Although these authors do at times write in styles that are not easily called "gothic," they illuminate their mutual concerns when they compose in the gothic mode.
For the purposes of this unit, it will be useful to think of gothic literature as that which plunges its characters into mystery, torment, and fear in order to pose disturbing questions to our familiar and comfortable ideas of humanity, society, and the cosmos.
"American Gothic" contextualizes these questions in terms of five nineteenth-century cultural trends: (1) the image of the swamp; (2) interest in the occult; (3) the image of America as a "ship of state"; (4) abuse of reason and science; (5) the senti-mentalization of death.

Thus, in a classically gothic denouement, Kim's shift of love and allegiance exposes the inhumanity of the "human" and the humanity of the "inhuman." [26] Yet there is something more here, something beyond a mere farce of the Oedipal drama.

MusicTeachers.co.uk Online Journal - Reviews - The Earliest Songbook in England
For 20 years, Gothic Voices and their director/scholar Christopher Page have been at the cutting edge of the research and performance of medieval music.
Of course the compilers of the Cambridge manuscript never intended it to be performed straight through: it was an anthology to be dipped into for different occasions, whether for use in church services or for entertainment at social gatherings.
Gothic Voices do their best to give the disc variety and structure by alternating monophony and polyphony, and by using a range of different voices.

 About Early Harps
Part-music of this period tends to employ the alto-baritone range of pitches, and the usual tuning of this harp began at GG - the gamut, by convention the lowest note in vocal music.
These Gothic harps were being played as late as the early 17th century, and players developed alternative tunings and finger-stopping techniques to create the illusion of chromatic notes (fl notes on a keyboard).
The 'Queen Mary' Harp in Scotland and the so-called 'Brian Boru' harp in Dublin are typical of late 15th and 16th century Irish harps with around 25-30 strings and a sound-box that is still small enough to rest on the player's lap.

One difference between the two, as the notes point out, is that the music of the latter remains anonymous, being collective contributions from a medieval monastery; while the composers and church leaders of the Notre Dame are among Europe's oldest known composers.
The lower voices of the Theatre of Voices create a profoundly deep foundation whereupon the upper voices intone their lines, singing everything with majestic uniformity, but not monotony.
Wedded to the naturally flowing and tonally unified voices of the singers, this imbues the sound with a magical atmosphere that does wonders to the music.

Gothic Voices performs the music very simply, either alternating soloists and unison choir over a drone or using a single unaccompanied voice.
Gothic Voices' straightforward approach is less likely to send you into a rapturous trance than is Sequentia's, but in the hands of such fine singers as Kirkby, Margaret Philpot, and Emily van Evera, Hildegard's extraordinary texts and melodies are captivating--and clear enough to linger in the memory as melodies rather than just sensations.
This is wonderful music, but it is not in the Germanic tradition of leading voices and suchlike: it must be given time.

Her compositions and writings have experienced a revival in recent years in conjunction with an increased interest in women's studies among scholars in a variety of disciplines.
Hildegard saw visions and heard voices throughout her life, but according to her account in Liber scivias domini ("Know the Ways of the Lord," hereafter Scivias), it was soon after becoming abbess that she was told to "tell and write" what she saw and heard.

 - The Mirror of Narcissus @ Soundbug
The second Gothic Voices recording was something of a milestone: the first recording of 14-century music performed by voices alone.
Belying its scholarly-but-dull reputation, Gothic Voices sings with plenty of energy and rhythmic snap; the monophonic songs, performed by a single unaccompanied voice, come off particularly well.
The best example of this disc's achievement is the famous "Douce dame jolie," which has been done as everything from a catchy little ditty to a fife-and-drum march: Margaret Philpot performs it as what it is--the forlorn plea of a spurned lover.

We hear examples of "same text" pieces, where all voices sing together the same words at the same time, as well as motets in which different texts are sung simultaneously.

We don't need a text (although full texts are provided) to tell us the joyful, celebratory purpose of many of the selections, and the sound is absolutely perfect, allowing appropriate distance for the voices to bloom and resonate while faithfully preserving the clarity of lines and texts.
Although it's beautifully sung by alto Catherine King, its length and meandering melody kill the excitement and momentum set off by the rousing and attention-getting opening song, "Verbum patris umanatur O O".
Lovers of early music and fans of the Gothic Voices will have this disc as a matter of course; but I would strongly suggest that others looking for a truly satisfying adventure along one of the more exotic paths through the forest of early music should not miss this either.
