Gothic fiction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is the predecessor of modern horror fiction and is the source of the connection between "gothic" and the dark and horrific.
The opprobrious term "gothick" was embraced by the 18th century proponents of the gothic revival, a forerunner of the Romantic genres.
Gothic revival architecture, which became popular in the nineteenth century, was a reaction to the classical architecture that was a hallmark of the Age of Reason.

 Gothic Literature
The term "Gothic" was coined by Italian Renaissance writers who attributed (blamed, is more like it) what they considered to be the non-classical ugliness of the art and architecture of the mid-12th to 15th centuries to the northern tribes of Germanic barbarians known as the Goths.
By the end of the 18th Century the meaning of the word "Gothic" sort of switched from "medieval" to "macabre", all with a little help from a man with a big fl lump of coal between his ears named Horace Walpole (1717-1797).
It also introduced the major Gothic themes: the idea of inherited evil (the son paying for the sins of the father), characters whose physical appearance corresponds with their spiritual state, and, most important of all, the identity of the castle or house with its owner.

Although Radcliffe uses examples from Shakespeare, rather than Gothic novels, to articulate her position, later critics have consistently adopted the terms "terror" and "horror" to distinguish between the two major strains of the Gothic represented by Radcliffe and Lewis respectively.
Horror resorts to a cruder presentation of the macabre: by an exact portrayal of the physically horrible and revolting, against a far more terrible background of spiritual gloom and despair.

 Gothic Cinema
For the place where the spirit of the Gothic has been the strongest and most conspicuous in the 20th Century has been in the much maligned and openly despised demimonde art form that is reffered to in the vernacular as the "horror movie".
At the heart of every Gothic tale, be it on the page or on the screen, is an eruption of supernatural chaos and disorder into the world.
It's only fitting that the gloomy spirit of the Gothic would make its first major emergence into this new medium, one of light and shadows, in its ancestral homeland of dear old Deutschland (let's not forget that the word "Gothic" comes from the name of the Germanic tribes known as the Goths, 'kay?).

Though the "Gothic" in its title was meant to signify "medieval," "rude" and "barbarous" the work did have a few defining thematic and stylistic factors that were to be used among early Gothic novels.
The Gothic subculture has always had a strong interest in vampires to the point where one of the few films to emerge from the subculture (as opposed to merely accepted by it) was the vampire movie The Hunger (Tony Scott, 1983), featuring David Bowie and a performance by Bauhaus.
It is a hybrid of horror, fantasy and distopian future sci-fi, and finally returns to the stylistic roots of German expressionism as represented in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

Just as these students were unanimous in what they wanted most from a horror story (fast-paced suspense), they were equally adamant about what ruins their fun: anything that smacks of a "literary" treatment and slows down the pace.
The students were laying down an important caveat for aspiring horror writers: In a genre which attempts to entertain with suspense and dark fantasy, there is a keen demand for raw imaginative power and an unorthodox daring-do of mind that can take writer and reader where others fear to tread.

Horror films, when done well and with less reliance on horrifying special effects, can be extremely potent film forms, tapping into our dream states and the horror of the irrational and unknown, and the horror within man himself.

Then again, the themes of Shelly’s novel certainly tug at the “horror” strings: isolation, life after death, chaotic ambition and the consequences of playing god can equally be looked upon as an in-depth look into the horrors of a dark humanity.
It is likely the horror literature movement has branched off and evolved from its more gothic cousin, yet the elements of the gothic can still be found in many works of the horror genre: abused heroines, foreboding mansions, and incestuous uncles are themes still prominent in the popular horror novels of today.
