  Gothmog (Third Age) Information
Gothmog is a fictional character from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth fictional universe.
This is the only reference in The Lord of the Rings to Gothmog, and his fate is not recorded, although it is strongly implied that he and almost all of the servants of Sauron that fought before the gates of Minas Tirith were destroyed.
It would seem that the Gothmog of the Third Age had taken, or been given, the name in memory of Morgoth's captain; an interesting choice, perhaps, since Sauron and the Lord of Balrogs were presumably rivals for Morgoth's favour during the Elder Days.

Gothmog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tolkien's fictional universe of Middle-earth, Gothmog was the Lord of the Balrogs and the High-Captain of Angband, one of the chief servants of the Dark Lord Morgoth with a rank equal to that of Sauron.
Gothmog was particularly visible in the six battles fought by Melkor's evil forces against the elves—he often led the hordes of Balrogs, Orcs, and Dragons personally.
It is not, however, certain if it was another name for Gothmog, or it simply meant "a Balrog lord." According to Christopher Tolkien, the latter is more probable, as the name Gothmog was mentioned in the earliest Middle-earth writings, as well as the final version of Tolkien's mythology.

To me it's much more plausible that the Gothmog who took power after the fall of the Lord of the Nazgûl was a being of higher and more fearsome status, such as a fl numenorean or a nazgûl.
In fact the fl numenorean theory has literary support- in the second age, two of Sauron's most influential cohorts are two fl numenoreans, Herumor and Fuinor, who both became Sauron's puppets in the South.
Option B: Gothmog = Black Númenorean: also possible since the Nazgûl were used in the Battle of Pelennor on their Fell Beasts and the army from Minas Morgul consisted also of Men (which race is unknown...

Tolkien's fictional universe of Middle-earth, Gothmog was the Lord of the Balrogs and the High-Captain of Angband, one of the chief servants of the Dark Lord Morgoth with a rank equal to that of Sauron.
In the earliest version of his mythology (The Book of Lost Tales), Tolkien describes Gothmog as a son of Morgoth and the ogress Fluithuin, but the idea of the children of Valar was abandoned in later writings.
According to Christopher Tolkien, the latter is more probable, as the name Gothmog was mentioned in the earliest Middle-earth writings, as well as the final version of Tolkien's mythology.
