In the 17th century the family was represented by several lines: those of Pappenheim (which held the margraviate of Stuhlingen till 1635), Treutlingen and Aletzheim, and the older branches (dating from the 13th and 14th centuries) of the marshals of Biberach and of Rechberg-Wertingen-Hohenreichen.
Gottfried Heinrich, who belonged to the Treutlingen branch, was the only one of this ancient and widely-ramified family to attain great distinction, though many other members of it played a strenuous, if subordinate, part in the history of Germany.

Gottfried Heinrich Graf zu Pappenheim (May 29, 1594 – November 17, 1632), imperial field marshal in the Thirty Years' War, was born at the little town of Pappenheim on the Altmühl, in Bavaria, the seat of a free lordship of the empire, from which the ancient family to which he belonged derived its name.

During the Thirty Years War the city of Magdeburg was besieged by the Holy Roman Empire's Imperial Army from November 1630 to 20 May 1631 in the Sack of Magdeburg.
On the latter date Gottfried Heinrich Graf zu Pappenheim, together with Johan Tzerclaes, Count of Tilly, attacked again and the city fell.
Subsequently the Imperial soldiers rapidly went out of control and started to massacre the inhabitants and set fire to the city.

On May 20, 1631, he led the assault against the Protestant city of Magdeburg, which was sacked and virtually destroyed by his troops.
Pappenheim was defeated (September) with Baron von Tilly by the Swedish king, Gustavus Adolphus (Gustavus II), at Breitenfeld, but his cavalry was later effective in raids on small bands of Swedish troops.
