Gottfried Heinrich Graf zu Pappenheim - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the same year, as an ardent friend of Spain, the ally of his sovereign and the champion of his faith, he raised troops for the Italian war and served with the Spaniards in Lombardy and the Grisons.
Pappenheim swiftly carried out his task, encountering a most desperate resistance, but always successful; and in a few weeks he had crushed the rebellion with ruthless severity (actions of Efferdingen, Gmünden, Vocklabruck and Wolfsegg, 15th-30th November 1626).
The retreat of the imperialists from the lost field he covered, however, with care and skill, and subsequently he won great glory by his operations on the lower Rhine and the Weser in rear of the victorious army of Gustavus Adolphus.

Pappenheim was Herbersdorf's son in law, and he commanded the army that crushed the peasants at Gmunden, Vocklabruck and Wolfsegg.
Pappenheim had different ideas, and on 16 September 1631 led what should have been a simple reconnaissance mission into a position where battle was unavoidable, forcing Tilly to come to his support.
In the meantime, Pappenheim was sent with his own army to the Weser, to guard against another Swedish army on the north coast, where he remained until late in 1632, when he was recalled by Wallenstein, now in command, for an attack on Saxony.

Pappenheim was defeated (September) with Baron von Tilly by the Swedish king, Gustavus Adolphus (Gustavus II), at Breitenfeld, but his cavalry was later effective in raids on small bands of Swedish troops.
Fighting under the imperial commander Albrecht von Wallenstein, he was mortally wounded at Lutzen.

An Imperial army under Gottfried zu Pappenheim had been besieging it since November 1630, and after a series of setbacks, he was joined by Tilly and the larger Imperial army in April 1631.
Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden was hampered by the attitude of the German princes and was unable to come to the aid of the city.
The city still managed to hold, and assaults on 17 and 18 May were repulsed, but on the morning of 20 November, Pappenheim attacked again, apparently without orders, and this time the city fell.

TheHistoryNet | Military History | Thirty Years' War: Battle of Breitenfeld
Ever since the Imperial cavalry general Gottfried Heinrich Graf zu Pappenheim had been sent to besiege the Lutheran-dominated city in November 1630, the hard-bitten mercenaries who made up the bulk of his army had lain in the mud and filth of the trenches outside Magdeburg, dreaming of the loot within.
The 72-year-old Tilly had grown exceedingly cautious and indecisive, but at the urging of his heavy cavalry commander, Count Pappenheim, he settled on laying siege to Magdeburg, the prosperous fortress city that commanded the Elbe River and had so far resisted Imperial domination.
Bold, dashing and wholly unsuited to the slow reduction of fortifications, Pappenheim set about knocking off the city's outlying redoubts one by one.

This is Schmalkalden and we remember in the background of our brain that there was something about the "Schmalkaldischer Bund" in the middle age or something like that (1531, Union by protestant guilds of the empire against Kaiser Karl V., Schmalkalden nowadays belongs to the European Tourism Association "Places of Reformation").
On the way towards Schmalkalden we pass the town of Pappenheim and remember this regiment "Pappenheimer" of the Shakespearean Wallenstein.
(But you can find out that the name of this regiment is derived from the General Graf Gottfried Heinrich zu Pappenheim).
