  Gotthard Base Tunnel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gotthard Base Tunnel is a railway tunnel under construction in Switzerland.
With a planned length of 57 km (35 miles) and a total of 153.5 km (95 miles) of tunnels, shafts and passages planned, it will be the longest railway tunnel in the world upon completion, ahead of the current longest, the Seikan Tunnel.
The tunnel is part of the Swiss AlpTransit project, also known as 'New Railway Link through the Alps NRLA' which also includes the Lötschberg Base Tunnel between the cantons of Berne and Valais.

Several tunnels are under construction, among them three from Zurich to the Gotthard tunnel and then to Lugano, and one in the western part of Switzerland.
In 1982, a 17-kilometer road tunnel was built in the same area, to avoid the 2,100 meters high climb through the pass.
The tunnels are reinforced with long Atlas Copco Swellex® rock-reinforcement bolts, and the roof and walls are being sprayed with concrete for safety.

The route requires several tunnels of which the Gotthard BaseTunnel is the main one with a length of 57 kilometers.
Apart from tunnelling through the heart of the mountain massifs, the approaches to the tunnel require a great deal of specialist foundation construction works.
Bauer is working at the most northerly section of the Gotthard Base Tunnel - the Erstfeld section to the South of Vierwaldstätter Lake - installing around 200 bored piles in diameters ranging from 1200 mm to 1500 mm for the northern approaches to the tunnel.

The Joint Venture is using a Putzmeister BRF 24-4.08 as well as a “Tunnel PUMA” of type BSF 18.09 for the concreting work at the Mitholz station which is positioned deep in the mountains, as well as for the concreting of the advance going away from it.
At the Mitholz section, the M 24-4 and the ‘Tunnel PUMA’ are at first concreting the floor sections and the vaults of the drivage as well as the different formworks in the spacious area of the station.

The Lötschberg Base Tunnel is a 34.6 km long tunnel currently being constructed, cutting through the Alps of Switzerland some 400 m below the level of the current Lötschberg Tunnel.
Seikan Tunnel The route over or though the Gotthard Pass is one of the most important, if not the most important, passages through the Alps in Europe.
The tunnel is part of the Swiss AlpTransit project, also known as 'New Railway Link throught the Alps NRLA' which also includes the Lötschberg Base Tunnel between the cantons of Berne and Valais.

For the Gotthard Base Tunnel to open at the end of 2015, the start of construction in the Altdorf/Erstfeld area is of central significance.
The project comprises approximately eight kilometres of base tunnel, construction of the underground branch-off for a future underground variant, the portal area, and the tracks for the overground section as far as the socalled "kink" at kilometre 98.2.
The work involved in the Erstfeld-Amsteg Tunnel Lot comprises driving the two single-track tunnels of the 7.8-kilometers-long Gotthard Base Tunnel section from Erstfeld to Amsteg, excavation of 23 connecting galleries, and construction of the underground branch-off for subsequent implementation of the "Long underground" route.

Between the Aar and Gotthard massifs the Tavetsch and Urseren-Garvera zone are to be crossed.
According to the latest results of exploratory borings, at the level of the base tunnel, massive dolomite marble is expected without water pressure, which will not present any problem to tunnel driving.

They’re talking about the problems with working underground, and the foreman is quoted as saying, “The biggest problem is the lack of oxygen.” Uh, yeah, that would be a problem.
Interesting fact: the 24 million tons of rock they excavate is turned into concrete at one of five concrete plants built at the openings to the work tunnels.

On June 1, 2006, of the total of 153.5 km of tunnels, galleries and passages of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, 94.1 km or 61.3% had been excavated.
The total amount driven in May 2006 was 1,870 metres.
