The carp were just below the Goulburn Weir wall, with hundreds of other dead fish, including federally protected endangered species such as trout cod and Murray cod, some thought to be up to 60 years old.
About 63 per cent of the Goulburn River's water is taken and used for dairying, cropping, grazing and horticulture.
Their key concerns are: the weir pools and the backwaters are drained each year, affecting fish breeding; vegetation is sprayed with chemicals; fish cannot travel upriver to breed because of the weir wall; and the river is not getting enough environmental flows and proper flushes.

An investigation by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) into the fish kill found no evidence of chemical pollution but that oxygen levels in parts of the river were too low for fish to survive.
