It is a good idea to refer to this work as "gourd stitch," unless you are a Native American pursuing the making of ritual objects.
Gourd stitch is basically an easy and undemanding technique, once you get it going.

 Class List
Participants will learn a variety of techniques to embellish gourd art with some of the new specialty fibers on the market today.  For this class, the project will be completed by creating a warp on the gourd for a simple weaving method.  Other techniques will be discussed and demonstrated during the class.
This class will help the beginning student learn about anything from growing gourds to finishing them.  Along with making a finished gourd bowl, they will be able to ask any number of questions, try their hand at a wide variety of available tools, and experiment with different decorative mediums.
Using an applicator, students will emboss the outside of the gourd.  This embossing is done using paints and a needle-type applicator, giving the design a slightly raised 3-D effect.  After the piece is dry, the inside of the gourd will be flocked to give it a velvet effect.

A beading stitch in which the beads are sewn together so that they make a texture resembling the chevrons in herringbone fabric.
A beading stitch used often as the first row in brick stitch in which a row of beads is sewn together, one bead on top of the other, resembling a ladder.
An embroidery stitch in which beads are strung onto thread and a hook needle fastened into a wooden handle (called a tambour needle) is used to make chain stitches on fabric as beads are slid into the stitches underneath the fabric.

A simple overhand stitch was used to attach the date palm to this gourd, but the effect is stunning.
Use an overhand stitch: loop the thread over the coil and insert the needle through the next hole in the gourd shell.
If you want to cover only the edge of the gourd with a single layer of date palm, taper the ends of the coil so they can be tucked behind the beginning of the row to create an even surface.

I was still having trouble with the turn arounds at the ends of the rows and lost a few beads here and there - whole rows for that matter probably (whew!) - but did manage to get her initial "B" on the back of the pouch without freaking out.
Plus, I can still incorporate gourds in some fashion into the beading work, which is double reward.
In a year from now, it will be fun to go back and see the progress I've made by looking at the quality of work on these early pieces.

This is an egg gourd, a hardshell gourd in the shape of an egg.
It is done in an adapted Peyote Stitch (gourd stitch) completely covered with white, irregular, transleuscent beads.

Ok, there were quite a few folks asking about how to put patterns together in gourd stitch so I thought I would see what I could do to help folks get started.
I have to agree about the regional differences and even more I notice personal styles that some beadworkers develop in gourd stitching and even their beadwork in general.
I also try to coordinate designs on a piece, like a gourd rattle or a southern singers leaning stick, so that the designs in different areas of the piece are not completely different form the rest, this gives some continuity to the finished work.

This name is controversial, and a bit of a misnomer too, because the Native American peyote stitch is different from the versions of this stitch commonly done by the beaders.
But the word peyote is now attached forever to this stitch, and I am not going to attempt to change common English language usage.
This version of peyote stitch shows more thread than the commonly known versions, but also offers the flexibility of changing the direction of the spiraling beads by simply pushing them over.

A stitch in which bead circles resembling flowers are fashioned by stringing a circle of beads on a thread, which is then passed through the center, picking up another bead, and out through the bead opposite the starting point.
As the description of the technique stated this stitch is not good to use for intricate designs but it does make something look interesting with the mish mash of colors.
One-drop gourd stitch involves alternating the pattern every other bead and in two-drop stitch it is alternated every two beads.

I have seen some flat gourd stitch done by contemporary Native artist on strick a lite bags, rosettes, and other smaller pieces of work.

It may be that flat circular brick stitch was introduced to the USA more recently than other areas of the world.
Silamide thread is strong enough for a hook or needle to grasp underneath the stitch to begin adding crochet or knitting stitches.

First, I understand there is a subtle difference between gourd and peyote when worked in the round.
In any event, back when I took this class, ndbele was hardly known, and few people regularly worked in comanche/brick, square or single needle right angle weave (at least in my area).
