Gourmand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A gourmand is a gourmet, or namely an individual who has a discerning palate, and is a connoisseur of good food.
An older usage of the word is to describe a person given to excess in the consumption of food and drink, synonymous with "glutton".
With the evolution in the meaning of gourmand (and gourmandise) away from gluttony, towards the appreciation of good food, French culinary proponents are advocating that the Catholic Church update the infamous list to refer to "gloutonnerie" rather than "gourmandise".

Instead, he and others argue, gourmand syndrome and a host of seemingly unrelated passions may serve as a window into the brain -- both in terms of diagnosing injury and in understanding its normal function.
In fact, neurologist Jeffrey Cummings of the University of California, Los Angeles suspects such behavioral fallout of brain injury may be fairly common but largely overlooked, precisely because neither the patient nor the physician tends to view the change as negative.
The first victim of gourmand syndrome -- or beneficiary, as the case may be -- was a political journalist who had never been particularly concerned about what he ate.

The gourmand is one whose chief pleasure is eating; but a gourmet is a connoisseur of food and wines.
In England the difference is this: a gourmand regards quantity more than quality, a gourmet quality more than quantity.
“In former times [in France] gourmand meant a judge of eating, and gourmet a judge of wine … Gourmet is now universally understood to refer to eating, and not to drinking.”—Hamerton: French and English, part v.
