UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET)
The killing of five UN workers in West Timor in September 2000 has led to increasing international demands that the Government of Indonesia disarm and disband militia elements based in West Timor that have been wreaking violence within West Timor and engaging in violent incursions into East Timor.
It is in our interest to see the Indonesian government complete this transition as well as to support the transition of East Timor to an independent state.
The decision in October 1999 by the National Assembly (MPR) to relinquish Indonesia’s claim to East Timor and the democratic selection of a new President and Vice-President were key steps in that direction.
