There are currently no functioning law schools in Afghanistan; a faculty of law was established at Kabul University in 1938, but the university - closed at one point under the Taliban regime - is currently in disarray and the status of the law program is unclear.

The recent example of substandard treatment of the Afghani government came to fore, when they failed to liberate Ajmal Naqshbandi, an Afghan interpreter and a freelance journalist who was detained by the Taliban on March 5 together with journalist Daniele Mastrogiacomo of the Rome-based La Repubblica newspaper.
While Mastrogiacomo was liberated in an exchange for five captive Taliban militants, whereas, Naqshbandi was executed by the militants, perhaps due to the shoddy attitude of the government towards local citizens.
The Karzai government once again, after it failed to release Naqshbandi from Taliban, is in the firing line as pressure is reinforced by local Afghani groups.

Even though our programs to assist the Government of Afghanistan (GOA) in combating the drug trade are working reasonably well in their initial stages, we have encountered some major challenges, notably with regard to helping the Afghan authorities dissuade farmers from growing poppy and destroy poppy fields when self-restraint is not sufficient to curb production.
We are working with the Government of Afghanistan and with our allies, most notably the United Kingdom, to rework some of our strategy aimed at assisting the Afghan authorities and Afghan people in the struggle against the opium poppy culture.
