Quoting from the judgment of Supreme Court, UMF president Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury said the court had pointed out that the Assam Government counsel had not pressed for withdrawal of the affidavit submitted by the AGP Government and that the new affidavit filed by the State Government may be treated as "an additional affidavit."
GUWAHATI: The United Minorities Front (UMF) on Sunday alleged that the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress Government had never pressed for the withdrawal of the affidavit submitted by the previous Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Government, which sought the scrapping of the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act 1983.
Accusing the Congress of "hoodwinking the minorities," he said the Government had not argued the case with facts and figures and opposed the striking down of the Act only because the party had made a promise in the election manifesto.

GUWAHATI: The Indian government has indicated that talks with Assam's key separatist group was possible if it broadened its list of demands and not simply stick to the issue of independence, a rebel mediator said on Wednesday.
Assamese writer Indira Goswami quoted India's National Security Advisor M K Narayanan as saying the government was ready to talk to the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) "on all issues relating to the state's peace and development, including on its main demand of sovereignty".
The outlawed ULFA had earlier rejected the prime minister's offer for unconditional talks with the government.

The Manmohan Singh Government may insist that the Army is "fully cooperating" with investigations into last month's custodial killing of Manorama Devi but the Assam Rifles men involved are refusing to testify before the official Commission probing the incident.
Justice Upendra had rejected in early August, the Assam Rifles had said that it was not safe for its soldiers to come and testify in an open court because of the threat posed by insurgents.
So far 23 witnesses had deposed before the Commission, constituted by the Manipur Government immediately after the killing of Manorama.
