Jersey City lies on the west bank of the Hudson River across from New York City, and is part of the New York metropolitan area.
Downtown Jersey City is the area from the Newark Bay Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike (Interstate 78) and the New Jersey Palisades east to the Hudson River, bounded by Hoboken to the north and Liberty State Park to the south.
Jersey City is bordered to the east by the Hudson River, to the north by Union City and Hoboken, to the west by Kearny and Newark, and to the south by Bayonne.

Among other New Jersey educational institutions are Fairleigh Dickinson Univ., with three campuses; Seton Hall Univ., mainly at South Orange; Stevens Institute of Technology, at Hoboken; the Univ. of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, with five campuses; and a number of state colleges.
