Western Australia is governed according to the principles of the Westminster system, a form of parliamentary government based on the model of the United Kingdom.
Legislative power rests with the Parliament of Western Australia, which consists of the Crown, represented by the Governor of Western Australia, and the two Houses, the Western Australian Legislative Council and the Western Australian Legislative Assembly.
In practice executive power is exercised by the Premier of Western Australia and the Cabinet, who are appointed by the Governor, but who hold office by virtue of their ability to command the support of a majority of members of the Legislative Assembly.

In 1870 Western Australia was granted representative Government with a Legislative Council consisting of 12 elected members and 6 members nominated by the Governor.
Western Australia was not granted responsible government until 1890 when Parliament was formed with a Legislative Assembly of 30 elected members and a Legislative Council of 15 members who initially were nominated by the Governor.

The policy also stipulates that government purchasers have the discretion to increase the capping of the preference (eg the maximum value of $50,000) on an individual contract where it can be demonstrated that awarding the contract to a local regional business will provide a measurable economic benefit.
The policy that was in effect during this reporting period required government agencies to endeavour to achieve a minimum local purchasing target of seventy percent (70%).

The Australian government is working on a proposal to deploy smart cards to millions of citizens under a project to slash administrative costs and crack down on identity theft.
Eric Abetz, the special minister of state, told ZDNet Australia on Wednesday that he and the Joe Hockey, minister for human services, are working on a project in which cards incorporating smart chip technology and a photograph of the bearer would replace a raft of government services- and concession-cards, including Medicare cards.
The government is hoping to launch the first cards in about two years.

Current plans by the Western Australian government of further extensions to this industrial complex designate 38% of Murujuga (Burrup Peninsula), the archipelago's major land area, to be occupied by petrochemical and other plants, increasing state emissions of air pollution by around 30%.
The expansion of the industrial complex by adding a multi-billion dollar petrochemical industry is opposed by the owners of the rock art, Aboriginal people of the region, and by scientists, conservators, conservationists, the local Shire Council of Roebourne, the local population, the state opposition parties, and even by at least one of the companies involved.
