A Cocos dialect of Malay and English are the main languages spoken and 80% of Cocos Islanders are Sunni Muslim.
The capital of the Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands is West Island.
The islands are administered from Canberra by the Department of the Environment, Sport, and Territories, with a non-resident Administrator (Evan Williams, appointed on 1 November 2003) appointed by the Governor-General (Evan Williams is also the Administrator of Christmas Island.

The Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands, also called Cocos Islands and Keeling Islands, is a territory of (A nation occupying the whole of the Australian continent; aboriginal tribes are thought to have migrated from southeastern Asia 20,000 years ago; first Europeans were British convicts sent there as a penal colony) Australia.
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands consist of two flat, low-lying coral (An island consisting of a circular coral reef surrounding a lagoon) atolls with an area of 14.2 km², 2.6 km of coastline, a highest elevation of five metres and thickly covered with coconut palms and other vegetation.
North Keeling Island is an atoll consisting of just one C-shaped island, a nearly closed atoll ring with a small opening into the (A body of water cut off from a larger body by a reef of sand or coral) lagoon, about 50 m wide, on the East side.

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are situated in the Indian Ocean approximately 2,700 kilometres north-west of Perth, Western Australia and 1000 kilometres south-west of Java.
The Islands are of volcanic origin and are made up of 27 coral islands, 26 of which form a typical horseshoe-shaped atoll surrounded by a coral reef.
In 1979 ownership of the village area of Home Island was transferred to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Council, the local governing body elected by the Home Island community, to be held in trust for the residents.

Although the Cocos (Keeling) islands were discovered in 1609 by Capt. William Keeling of the East India Company, they remained uninhabited until 1826, when the first settlement was established on the main atoll by an Englishmen, Alexander Hare, with a group of followers, predominantly of Malay origin.
In 1857 the islands were annexed to the Crown; in 1878 responsibility was transferred from the Colonial Office to the Government of Ceylon, and in 1886 to the Government of the Straits Settlements.
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands Council, established as the elected body of the Cocos Malay community in July 1979, advises the Administrator on all issues affecting the Territory.

The Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Senator Ian Campbell, today announced up to $1.6 million Australian Government funding to install a wind turbine at Bremer Bay on Western Australia's south coast and $500,000 to install WA-made wind turbines on Home Island in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
This will allow the wind turbine to generate about 1,800 MWh of renewable electricity each year, meeting up to 40% of the town's electricity supply and reducing diesel consumption by an average of about 340,000 litres per year, resulting in a greenhouse gas reduction of over 900 tonnes of CO per year.

The Federal Government has been trying to implement the migration zone changes since the rush of boatpeople to Australia in 2001, when 1544 people were intercepted en route to Australia in three months, and were processed in Papua New Guinea and Nauru.
The Government believes ruling islands out of the migration zone will deter asylum-seekers by boat because they are likely to be detected before reaching the mainland.

It seems that it’s been referred to as the Cocos Islands for centuries (I’m still not sure why), but the name Keeling in parentheses is used to distinguish it from the other Cocos Islands in the world.
South Island is the inhabited one and refers to a collection of smaller islands.
Cocos was transferred from Britain to Australia in the early 1950’s, but it was not until the early 1980’s that the Malay people voted to become fully integrated with Australia.
