Archibald Acheson, 2nd Earl of Gosford GCB (Markethill, County Armagh August 1, 1776 – March 27, 1849 Markethill) was a British politician who served as Lieutenant-Governor of Lower Canada and Governor General of British North America in the 19th century.
Gosford attempted to distance himself from his predecessor, Lord Aylmer, who had exacerbated the hostility of French-Canadians to the British administration.
Gosford officially established the Diocese of Montreal in 1836, though it had been unofficially created a few years before.

When the original 1839 survey map of the area was sent to Governor Gipps in Sydney, the map called the proposed township Point Frederick (after Frederick Augustus Hely, local landowner and Superintendent of Convicts who had died in 1836) The map was returned with the annotation "to be called Gosford".
East Gosford was an early private township on Brisbane Water, established in a period when the Government of the time were very slow to develop services in the district.

Governor Arthur Phillip and a small group of officers and marines made a brief exploration of Broken Bay and a tributary called the "north-east arm" in 1788, after establishing the settlement at Sydney Cove just five weeks before.
The first township was established at East Gosford by Samuel Peek in the 1830’s, with a government township originally known as the Township at Point Frederick being surveyed and established between Narara and Erina Creeks.
Gosford became a town in 1885 and was declared a municipality in 1886.

The present Gosford Castle, which lies just outside the village of Markethill, was the third to have been erected in the demesne by the Acheson family, and was designed by Thomas Hopper for Archibald Acheson, 2nd Earl of Gosford, who was for a time Governor of Lower Canada.
The Achesons' first house was a fortified tower that was destroyed in the 1640 Rebellion; their second house was visited by Dean Swift in the late 1720s, and at one time he planned to build a house nearby.
The old Gosford demesne is now known as Gosford Forest Park; it has been managed by the Forestry Division of the Department of Agriculture since 1969, and in 1987 it became the first 'conservation forest' designated by the Department.
