Arkansas's 35th governor was born in Fort Worth, Texas, moved with his family to Enid, Oklahoma, attended Oklahoma Aand M College, and graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1936, earning a law degree.
Cherry was elected Governor of Arkansas on November 4, 1952 after a campaign in which he effectively used the medium of radio to raise both his visibility and campaign funds.
In 1970, 1974, and 1986 he sought reelection as governor of Arkansas but was unsuccessful in each attempt at a political comeback, the last time losing to Bill Clinton.
