Joseph Eugene Kernan (born April 8, 1946), widely known as Joe Kernan, is an American politician who became the Governor of Indiana on September 13, 2003 upon the death of Frank O'Bannon.
Born in 1946 in Chicago, Illinois, prior to becoming the governor, he had served as the Lieutenant Governor of Indiana.
As lieutenant governor of Indiana, Kernan served as the president of the Indiana Senate, the director of the Indiana Department of Commerce, and as the commissioner of Agriculture.

Frank Lewis O'Bannon was an American politician who was Governor of Indiana from 1997 until his death, on September 13, 2003.
First elected to his father's seat in the Indiana state senate in 1970, where he was the primary sponsor of legislation reintroducing the death penalty, he became lieutenant governor in 1989 when Evan Bayh was elected governor.
During the boom years of the 1990s, when Indiana amassed a record $2 billion surplus, O'Bannon was able to cut taxes by $1.5 billion, hire 500 more police officers in the state and win increased funding for schools and extended health insurance for poor families.

Governor Morton was the first to offer troops when Lincoln issued the call; in less than seven days, more than twelve thousand men (nearly three times the quota) had been tendered.
Governor Morton became Senator Morton in 1867 and was elected to a second term in the Senate in 1872.

JONATHAN JENNINGS, Indiana's first state governor, was a minister's son, born in New Jersey and educated in the common schools of Pennsylvania.
Jennings was elected governor in 1816, handily defeating the incumbent territorial governor, Thomas Posey.
Indiana historian William Wesley Woollen says that Jennings lost his seat in Congress in 1830 because his friends were concerned about his drinking problem, believing that life in Washington tended to increase Jennings' dependence on alcohol.

WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON was born in Virginia, the son of Benjamin Harrison, who was himself a governor of Virginia and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Harrison was appointed secretary of the Northwest Territory on June 26,1798, and in 1799 was elected a territorial delegate to Congress, where he served until May, 1800, when he was appointed governor of the Indiana Territory, an area that initially included all of the original Northwest Territory except Ohio.
Steele painted a portrait of Harrison as one of the epochal governors chosen for the centennial celebration in 1916.
