CHICAGO -- Governor Tom Vilsack of Iowa is exploring whether he can skirt a Senate panel's vote and install an openly gay lawyer to the state education board despite a narrow rejection of the appointment following a divisive two-day debate in the state capital.
The governor said after the vote that "we are going to consider what our options are." A Vilsack spokesman, Matt Paul, said Friday that going ahead and putting Wilson on the nine-member board is one option being studied.
The Iowa vote appears to fly in the face of national trends in recent years showing voters are increasingly tolerant of gay public officials, said Dave DeCicco, a spokesman for the Victory Fund, a Washington-based group that supports gay political candidates.
