ABC 7 News - Bitter Showdown for Governor in Washington   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Washington (AP) - Eight states are choosing candidates Tuesday for the Senate, House and governor in the last big primary day before the November election, including a bitter gubernatorial contest and races for two open congressional seats in Washington state.
The highest-profile race is the Democratic gubernatorial primary in Washington between the state's leading fl politician and a female attorney general who took on the tobacco industry in the 1990s and helped negotiate a $206 billion settlement with cigarette makers.
Washington has long operated under a wide-open "blanket" primary in which all candidates appeared on one ballot and the top finisher from each party advanced to the general election.

Republican candidate for Governor of Washington Dino Rossi is ahead of both Democrats and within 6 points of their combined total.
And Elway observes that Rossi's 35 percent is a baseline figure for Republican gubernatorial candidates in Washington.
The likely Republican nominee for Governor of Washington, Dino Rossi, is actually a slick huckster whose carefully-manicured image as a likeable suburban moderate - and experienced state legislator - masks an extremist conservative soul.

Washington is one of only two states that allow voters to mail absentee ballots as late as Election Day.

The Seattle Times: Politics: Gregoire says recount the whole state or don't recount at all
Democrat Christine Gregoire said this morning that if her party doesn't raise the money for a statewide recount, she will concede the governor's race rather than count only a few counties.
Republican Dino Rossi was certified as governor-elect Tuesday after last week's machine recount gave him a 42-vote victory margin - perhaps the closest governor's race in the nation's history.
Gregoire's statement does not say specificially what she will do if there is not money for a statewide recount.

Sound Politics: 2004 Governor's Race Archives
Fifth, the practice of ballot enhancement, reportedly used widely in King County for the purpose of electing the Governor, is a violation of the constitutional concept of equality in the electoral process.
Specifically, if Washington State designated a unique set of ballots to be counted for the purpose of electing the Governor in the 2004 election, and this was a different set than was used to elect the other officials, the State would appear to be in violation of the United States Constitution.
In no uncertain terms, if Washington State concluded that the original set of ballots used to decide the various ballot items in the 2004 election was valid, then it must use this set for all statewide ballot items, including election of the Governor.

 Powerpundit: Washington State Governor Update
After a while, you really do have to start laughing at the whole situation in Washington - I know it is very serious business and we do have to do all we can to prevent the Democrats from stealing an election, but their actions in Washington have reached the level of pure farce.
Now we are told that the number of discovered ballots is 573 - which with 57% going for Gregoire would give her 327 votes, or a 7 vote net lead (guess they wanted to pad it by six just in case the other two uncounted Counties come up with a few more Rossi votes).
Our fellow Republicans in Washington are still fighting it - and perhaps the increasing brazeness of the Democratic attempts to steal the election will make the Washington courts call a halt but I've never seen a more pathetic thing in my life...it's like political power is crack for the Democrats.

WASHINGTON – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger yesterday wrapped up another of his "save California" trips to this city – this one marked by meetings with President Bush and Cabinet secretaries, fund-raisers for his ballot initiatives and yet more appeals for federal money for the state.
But Schwarzenegger, a Republican, was dogged throughout the day by protesters and reports that a company from India is helping to put his proposals before voters.
Unlike his last visit less than three weeks ago, when the media-magnet was happy to pose for cameras and describe his Washington agenda, a tight-lipped Schwarzenegger evaded reporters this time.

Democrat Takes Lead in Washington State (washingtonpost.com)
SEATTLE, Dec. 22 -- It took three statewide counts and a ruling by the Washington State Supreme Court to do it, but Christine Gregoire, the Democratic candidate for governor, has taken a narrow -- and perhaps decisive -- lead in one of the closest statewide elections in U.S. history.
The results of the second recount have not yet been certified as official by the Washington secretary of state, and a lawyer for the state Republican Party said Wednesday that if Rossi does lose after the third and final recount, the party would contest the election before the state legislature, which is controlled by Democrats.
Republicans said Wednesday that the state Supreme Court has suddenly changed the rules for counting votes in the governor's race and that the party would urgently look across Washington state for ballots that were improperly disqualified.
