The Bank of England is the central bank of the United Kingdom.
Scottish and Northern Irish banks retain the right to issue own banknotes but they must be backed to one with deposits in the Bank England excepting a few million pounds representing value of notes they had in circulation 1845.
The bank was founded along with the Bank of Scotland by William Paterson in 1694 to act as the English Government's the Bank of Scotland was to be Scottish Government's banker.

The bank spokesman also said it was possible that more than $43.5 million was stolen, but the final figure will not be known until the security company completes its accounting.
The Governor of the Bank of England has asked for a review of the security arrangements for the storage of bank notes.

Mervyn King, the governor of the Bank of England, yesterday ruled out the possibility of a new housing boom when he stressed that even after the slowdown two years ago, property valuations looked "remarkably high".
