Ohio, the region north of the Ohio River and south of the Great Lakes, was originally controlled by various native tribes, primarily the Iroquois at the time of European colonization.
Ohio's southern border is defined by the Ohio River (with the border being at the 1793 low-water mark on the north side of the river), and much of the northern border is defined by Lake Erie.
As of the 2000 census, the population of Ohio is 11,353,140.

In 1966, Governor Rhodes was reelected by a record 703,000-vote margin over the Democratic candidate, Frazier Reams, and began his second term on January 9, 1967, thus becoming the first governor elected for two consecutive four-year terms under the constitutional amendment of 1954.
From the first, the governor has placed a great deal of emphasis on the industrial development of the state and considers providing jobs for all employable workers and training them to qualify for the available jobs to be one of the primary functions of state government.
Governor Rhodes is married to the former Miss Helen Rawlins of Jackson, Ohio.

Ohio's twelfth governor, Robert Lucas, was born at Shepherdstown, Virginia, on April 1, 1781.
Governor Lucas protested the use of his name in 1836 as a candidate for a third term, but agreed to run for the United States Senate.
Again in Ohio in 1843, Lucas was induced to become the Democratic candidate for congressman in the eighth district.

THOMAS J. The Republican landslide in Ohio in 1946 brought to the office of chief executive of the state as Ohio's fifty-sixth governor, Thomas J. Herbert, who was well known to Ohio voters, having served as attorney general for three terms.
During Governor Herbert's administration, 1947-49, a number of constructive measures were enacted at the governor's urging or with his approval.
Most important, in the governor's opinion, were six bills reducing or eliminating certain taxes (the tax on sales amounting to less than forty-one cents was rescinded), with a saving to the taxpayers of $86,000,000 and two bills appropriating a total of $45,000,000 from the surplus in the treasury for compensation to World War II veterans.

Duncan McArthur, the eighth Governor of Ohio, was born in Dutchess County, N. Y., in 1772.
The coal-fields of Ohio are composed of alternate beds of coarse-grained sandstone, clay shales, layers of ironstone, thin beds of limestone and numerous strata of coal.
Ohio was draped with the garb of mourning at the close of the war.

In Feb of 1810, Zanesville became the seat of Governmemnt of Ohio, but by the 1811-12 session of the Legislature, however, discision was made to make Columbus, the permanent State Capital, however buildings were not as yet complete to house such, so in the meantime the central government convened at Chillicothe.
In 1811 Ohio was divided into five medical districts by the Legislature, each district entitled to three censers, who acted as examiners or licensers of applicants who desired to practice medicine.
Governor Meig gave good leadership in the war of 1812, by recruiting 1,200 militia for the State in time for Hull's rendezvous at Dayton.

The gubernatorial discussion was held October 29, 1994, at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus, capping off a day of forums devoted to the state's political institutions and recent political history.
The three governors recounted their accomplishments as well as the difficulties they faced, covering controversies over taxes, spending priorities, and the daunting task that each leader faced in sustaining support for his initiatives in this large and diverse state.

The third governor of Ohio, Samuel Huntington, was born in Coventry, Connecticut, on October 4, 1765.
Governor St. Clair appointed him lieutenant colonel of the Trumbull County militia in charge of the troops of the Western Reserve.
Governor Huntington was not a candidate for reelection but ran against Thomas Worthington for the United States Senate.

Samuel Johnston (1733-1816), governor of North Carolina in 1788, was a son of Gabriel Johnston, a Colonial governor of that province.

Ohio's nineteenth governor was William Bebb of Butler County, the third native Ohioan to be elected to the office.
Governor Bebb was inaugurated on December 12, 1846.
Governor bebb's term expired in December 1848, but his administration was continued until January 22, 1849, because of a delay in organizing the two houses of the assembly and in qualifying his successor.

WASHINGTON--Samuel W. Speck, the director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, will be among seven individuals and one organization honored for their distinguished service and invaluable contributions to state government at the National Governors Association's (NGA) 2004 Annual Meeting in Seattle later this month.
As a member of the Ohio House, Speck authored the landmark Strip Mine Reclamation Act, which transformed eastern Ohio's landscape, improved its economy, and served as a model for federal legislation.  As a state senator, he wrote legislation overhauling public utility regulation laws.
Besides Ohio, this year's recipients hail from four other states and one U.S. territory: Guam, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, and Virginia.

Right now, the Council of Great Lakes Governors is considering Annex 2001, a historic compact designed to limit withdrawals and consumption of Great Lakes water.
While the compact is a good start, it does not require strict water conservation, does not cap total water withdrawals from the lakes, and allows triggers for regional review that are so high that only massive new uses will be affected.
Please urge Governor Taft (who is Co-Chair of the Council of Great Lakes Governors), the rest of the Great Lakes Governors and the Ohio DNR to strengthen this agreement and protect our Great Lakes water.
