Govert (or Govaert) Teuniszoon Flinck (January 25, 1615 - February 2, 1660) was a Dutch painter of the Dutch Golden Age.
Flinck here painted his own likeness to the left in a doorway The mannered period of Flinck is amply illustrated in the Marcus Curius eating Turnips before the Samnite Envoys, and Solomon receiving Wisdom, in the palace on the Dam at Amsterdam.
In November 1659 the burgomaster of Amsterdam contracted with Flinck for 12 canvases to represent four heroic figures of David and Samson and Marcus Curius and Horatius Cocles, and scenes from the Batavians and Romans.

For many years Flinck labored on the lines of Rembrandt, following that masters style in all the works which he executed between 1636 and 1648; then he fell into peculiar mannerisms by imitating the swelling forms and grand action of Rubenss creations.
But the best of Flincks productions in this style is the peace of MUnster in the museum of Amsterdam, a cans as with 19 life size figures full of animation in the faces, radiant with Rembrandtesque color, and admirably distributed.

Flinck first studied in Leeuwarden and later entered Rembrandt's studio.
Later he developed a more florid and oratorical manner, in which he appears to have been influenced by Rubens, as in the "Allegory in Memory of Prince Frederick Henry" (1654).
Flinck's most successful works were portraits, and he was especially successful in his group portraits -- e.g., "A Goldsmith and His Family," and "Celebration of the Civic Guard at the Signing of the Peace of Münster" (1648).

Flinck was born in Cleves in 1615 or 1616 and died in Amsterdam in 1660.
Afterwards he and Jacob Becker who apprenticed at the same time that Flinck did, went to Amsterdam to work under Rembrandt from about 1633 to 1636.
Nine of his drawings are included in the collection of the Museum Boymans-van Beunigen and are illustrated in Jeroen Giltaij, The Drawings by Rembrandt and his School (Rotterdam: Museum Boymans-van Beunigen, 1988).

There is a portrait, formerly ascribed to Rembrandt but actually by his Mennonite pupil Govert Flinck (1614-60), of Gozen Centen, a regent (member of the board of directors) of the Amsterdam Mennonite old people's home called Rijpenhofje.
The greatest Dutch poet, Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679, q.v.), who was a Mennonite (for a time deacon) for many years until his conversion to Catholicism, was often pictured, as for instance by Govert Flinck and Philip de Koninck.
Perhaps a direct influence of their religious attitude may be seen most easily in the Biblical subjects painted by David Joris, Lambert Jacobsz, Govert Flinck, and Rembrandt.
