		Gower's father, John Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Gower, was a prominent Tory politician who became the first major Tory to enter government since the Hanoverian succession, joining the Carteret administration of 1742.
		Gower was associated with the faction of the Duke of Bedford, who was his brother-in-law, and as a member of that faction was given many governmental positions.
		Gower was frustrated by what he saw as the North administration's inept handling of the war, and he resigned from the cabinet in 1779.

		He belonged to a good Kentish family, but the suggestion of Sir Harris Nicolas that the poet is to be identified with a John Gower who was at one time possessed of the manor of Kentwell is open to serious objections.
		There is no evidence that he ever lived as a country gentleman, but he was undoubtedly possessed of some wealth, and we know that he was the owner of the manors of Feltwell in Suffolk and Moulton in Norfolk.
		There is no sufficient ground for the suggestion~ based partly on the subsequent omission of these lines anc partly on the humorous reference of Chaucer to Gowers Confessi amantis in the introduction to the Man of Laws Tale, that th~ friendship was broken by a ofarrel.

		John Gower, the poet, has been by some writers identified with one John Gower, clerk, who by grant from King Richard II held the rectory of Great Braxted in Essex from 1390 to 1397.

		Gower lived late in life as a layman at the priory of St. Mary Overie in Southwark and may have established a scriptorium there to produce his works.
		His effigy in Southwark Cathedral depicts Gower, his head resting on his three important works (Speculum meditantis, Vox clamantis, and Confessio amantis) and his neck encircled in a collar of pendant swans, which Henry IV had given him in 1393.
		It was a didactic age, and Gower was fully in sympathy with the prevailing tendency to edification; but his books, on the whole, have a somewhat higher literary quality than might be supposed from his description of them.
