Gracanica monastery was considerably reconstructed: all the openings in the external vestibule were filled, and a new layer of frescoes was completed on September 3, 1570.
Gracanica Monastery Church has the shape of five-dome building with the foundation in the shape of the developed cross and, thus, belongs to the group of the first-class architectural achievements of the epoch.

Gracanica Monastery one of King Milutin's last monumental endowments, is situated in the vicinity of Lipljane, the ancient town of Ulpianus, and the old residence of bishops.
Three styles of painting are present in Gracanica monastery: the earliest painting is in the nave, while two later ones were employed in the external vestibule.
In the first zone of Gracanica church there are about 80 figures, about 150 busts saints in the second zone, and over 100 compositions from the cycles Great Holidays, Christ's Passion, Miracles and Parables, scenes from the life of the Theotokos and St. Nicholas, motifs from the Old Testament and liturgical scenes.

The fine arrangement of architectural masses, their step-like narrowing as they rise, the red and yellow stone used - combine to produce a very harmonious construction, regarded as the most beautiful structure in the early Serbian architecture.
