Gracchi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gracchi were a noble plebeian family of ancient Rome.
The Gracchi brothers, Tiberius and Gaius, went down in history as two martyrs to the cause of social reform.
The Gracchi were connected through marriage to the Scipiones, Cornelii, Claudii, and Paulli.

GRACCHI [Gracchi], two Roman statesmen and social reformers, sons of the consul Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus and of Cornelia.
Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus, d.133 BC, the elder of the Gracchi, fought at Carthage (146 BC) and in Spain (137).
Alarmed at the state of Italy and the provinces, where the middle class was being totally eliminated by concentration of wealth and lands in the hands of a few, Tiberius stood for the tribunate of the people in 133 BC as an avowed reformer.

The Gracchi in many way frame the argument between the status quo of the late Republic and attempts at reform.

 Second Century - Domestic Difficulties
Those who would defend Senatorial privilege (and what they claimed was the mos maiorum) who came to be called the optimates (the best people), flush with their victory over the Gracchi, became entrenched and unwilling to compromise on the pressing social issues that faced Rome.
While the populares (themselves members of the political elite) frequently were less than committed to the cause of Roman social reform for its own sake, they now had a weapon to use in their struggles for power in the Senate - an appeal to the people.
A good portion of the rank and file citizenry had come to distrust the optimates and to regard the Gracchi as men who had died for their sake.

Philosophy, et cetera: The Gracchi   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Gracchi were politicians – it would be naïve to assume that their policies and actions were motivated purely by altruism, with no regard for their own political interests.
In contrast, both Gracchi brothers fought hard to ensure that their policies were carried out, and so their reforms resulted in genuine progress being made.
As politicians, they were no doubt influenced to some degree by their own interests, by ‘opportunism’, but as it was in accordance with what they perceived as meeting the needs of their society, this was hardly blameworthy.

The Gracchi were a famous patrician family of ancient Rome.
After a successful military career, Tiberius Gracchus went into politics trying to bring massive reforms to the military to its strength and morale.
This set a dangerous precedent, one that would signal the long decline of the republic of Rome.

In treating of the first half of those hundred years of revolution, which began with the tribunate of Tiberius Gracchus and ended with the battle of Actium, it is mainly the fall of the Republican and the foreshadowing of the Imperial system of government which have to be described.
The new nobles rapidly drew aloof from the residuum of the plebs, and, in the true _parvenu_ spirit, aped and outdid the arrogance of the old patricians.
There were two classes among them--the rich landlords and capitalists, who prospered as the rich at Rome prospered, and the poor who were weighed down by debt or were pushed out of their farms by slave-labour, or were hangers-on of the rich in the towns and eager for distributions of land.

So too was a law that each senator had to take an oath to support the new legislation or surrender his seat, and only one among the frightened senators refused to acquiesce.
Hatreds remained from the period of the Gracchi brothers two and three decades before, and, given the violence that had been used in the past by those opposed to reform, Saturninus, Glaucia and their backers saw their use of violence as appropriate.
And they were becoming fed up with the imperious attitudes of visiting Roman officials, as when the wife of a visiting senior Roman official had all the men turned out of a bath so she could use it and then complained that the bath was not clean.

Factional politics: should the measure go through, the Gracchi would gain an enormous clientele and threaten the elite's control of the state.
It is clear in the sources that many Romans, including perhaps some of his own supporters and clients, firmly believed that Gracchus was aiming at regnum (=kingship, a nasty word in the Roman political vocabulary).
