Whatever the genre, her "The Speed of Grace" is as good a collection of songs as you'll probably hear all year.
Her first album was terrific, and the follow-up, The Speed of Grace (*** 1/2 stars), offers a new batch of songs with sensuous, hard-edged lyrics that Berg sings exactly as written.
The album also includes a credible cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" and a reprise of the title song from Berg's debut album that she imparts with a sense of betrayal that is absent from the earlier version.

Spiritualized : Amazing Grace - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
The pair of rockers that begin Amazing Grace are just as driven as anything that has come out of the recent wave of garage rock revivalism, but save for some lo-fi affectations, could easily appear on any of Spiritualized's other albums.
Amazing Grace touches on all of Spiritualized's song archetypes: fiery rockers ("Never Going Back," "Cheapster"), gospel-tinged pleas for salvation ("Lord Let It Rain on Me"), ethereal laments ("Rated X"), and forays into jazz ("The Power and the Glory"), but, despite energetic performances and a relatively simple approach, very few of the songs connect.
Amazing Grace is far from a bad album, but it's not an especially compelling one, either.

Jeff Buckley : Grace - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Grace is an audacious debut album, filled with sweeping choruses, bombastic arrangements, searching lyrics, and above all, the richly textured voice of Buckley himself, which resembled a cross between Robert Plant, Van Morrison, and his father Tim.
And that's a fair starting point for his music: Grace sounds like a Led Zeppelin album written by an ambitious folkie with a fondness for lounge jazz.
At his best -- the soaring title track, "Last Goodbye," and the mournful "Lover, You Should've Come Over" -- Buckley's grasp met his reach with startling results; at its worst, Grace is merely promising.

Amazing Grace® joins that ever-growing elite of albums named after a song title that does not appear on that album, in this case Spiritualized's version of the old hymn Amazing Grace, which had appeared in 2002 on the single of Do It All Over Again.
That single was taken from the 2001 album Let It Come Down, an album that had been four years in the making and had been generally regarded as somewhat bloated and over-produced, with gospel choirs and 100-piece orchestras eventually detracting from the beautiful compositions that lay at the core of the album.
