The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Graceland
Paul Simon famously traveled to Africa to find inspiration (and some musical collaborators) for this album, and it is greater for this.
The latter half of the album is just as strong, with "Under African Skies" hooking a guitar loop underneath gorgeous dueling vocals (courtesy of Linda Ronstadt) and "The Myth of Fingerprints" seeking an entire new mood for the album, with a faster pulse and harder music.
Graceland is an excellent album; if it suffers, it suffers from trying too hard -- the African influences at times feel a bit contrived, although in fairness that is rare.

 Simon, Paul (1941—) Biography | sjpc_04_package.xml
One of his most well-known works, the Grammy-winning album Graceland, drew both protest and praise for his use of South African musicians during the height of the Apartheid regime in the 1980s.
The Latino music influence was evident on that self-titled album's cut "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard," and the Caribbean-flavored song "Mother and Child Reunion," which was recorded in Jamaica.
Graceland is an interesting album because not only is it chock full of Simon's consistently good pop songs, but it has also sparked many debates surrounding the political and cultural implications of a white American working with fl South Africans under the Apart-heid regime.

Graceland by Paul Simon on Rhapsody Online
For Simon, the randb-derived mbaqanga he and his South African sidemen--guitarist Ray Phiri, fretless bassist Baghiti Kumalo, and drummer Isaac Mtshali, all players of conspicuous responsiveness and imagination--put through their Tin Pan Alley paces seems to represent a renewed sense of faith and connectedness after the finely wrought dead end of Hearts and Bones.
The singing has lost none of its studied wimpiness, and he still writes like an English major, but this is the first album he's ever recorded rhythm tracks first, and it gives up a groove so buoyant you could float a loan to Zimbabwe on it.
Despite the personalized cameo for Sun City scab Linda Ronstadt (a slap in the face to the ANC whether he admits it or not) and the avoidance of political lyrics elsewhere, he's found his "shot of redemption," escaping alienation without denying its continuing truth.

On the recording of the album, the pennywhistle was recorded by a white, non-South African man. This is just one example of how something that would usually be done by a fl South African was done by a white male on the album.
I think that the album was culturally progressive; however, there are those that still, to this day, believe that South African music should remain in South Africa where it originated.

For the tour, Simon recruited South African performers Ladysmith Black Mambazo (who had appeared on the Graceland album), Miriam Makeba, and Hugh Masekela.
