Topic: Graduated cylinder

In the News (Thu 16 May 13)

  Description
Graduated cylinders are used to measure the volume of liquid samples and are available in many different sizes.
The measurement accuracy of a graduated cylinder is rather poor (may be as much as 10% off) so you must consider the desired accuracy before choosing to use a graduated cylinder.
Generally, graduated cylinders are not appropriate for the preparation of analytical solutions - pipets, volumetric flasks, and burets should be used instead.

Measuring volume using a graduated cylinder
A graduated cylinder measures in milliliters, which is a measure of volume.
Measuring with a graduated cylinder is complicated somewhat by a meniscus.
Students should place the graduated cylinder on the table and then lower their heads to be able to read the meniscus at eye level.

Graduated cylinder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A graduated cylinder can be made of translucent plastic or borosilicate glass such as Pyrex.
Generally, as a cylinder is narrowed, more precise measurements can be obtained in readings, as the graduation markings are farther apart for the same volume.
A burette is a type of graduated cylinder for precisely measuring the amount of liquid released through a valve at the bottom, rather than the volume collected from the top.

As mentioned earlier, a graduated cylinder is not nearly as accurate as a pipet.
The main advantage to using a graduated cylinder is it requires much less technique than does a pipet.
When deciding between using a pipet or graduated cylinder, the following rule is easy to use: if the sample volume is larger than 25 mL and the sample measurement does not have to be extremely accurate, use a graduated cylinder.

Graduated cylinders are made to ISO 4788 & are accurate to 1.0% of full scale.
For accurate work, only the upper half should be used since 1% of full scale on a 1L cylinder is equivalent to a 10% error at the 100ml line.

Also be careful not to put in so much water that the water level will rise past the graduated cylinder’s markings when the object(s) are placed in the graduated cylinder.
3) After filling the graduated cylinder to a satisfactory level, record the volume of the water as (a) in your data.
Smaller graduated cylinders are oftentimes capable of making more accurate measurements than larger graduated cylinders.

When the density of a liquid is to be calculated, the mass and volume can be obtained by direct measurements using a balance for measuring mass, and a graduated cylinder, or other calibrated glassware for measuring volume.
To determine the density of an irregularly shaped solid that is insoluble in water, the mass is obtained by direct measurement on a balance.
Graduated cylinders range in size from 1 mL to more than 1 L, and provide a moderate degree of accuracy.

If the graduated cylinder is dirty inside, you are getting a volume measurement that may not be correct, since the dirt also has a volume that may be included in the volume measurement.
If the cylinder is wet inside, you will get a volume larger than the true volume due to the water being present in the bottom of the graduated cylinder.
The volume of the cylinder is determined by measuring the height and diameter of the cylinder.
