Graeme Hick - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hick was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe), and was included in that country's World Cup squad at the age of 17.
In 1985, Hick played both for Zimbabwe (who were touring England) and for his county, and he enjoyed a successful season, ending with a batting average of over fifty, and scoring his first century: 230 for the Zimbabweans against Oxford University.
Hick followed his breakthrough century against India with scores of 47, 68, 26, 22, 34, 20 and 64 at an average of 40 and yet found himself dropped after the 2nd Ashes test of 1993.

Graeme Hick   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Graeme Hick, coming in to bat on Sunday, after possibly one of his worst days on Saturday, with a second ball duck, and two catches evading his usually safe grasp, decided that as his test career was once again hanging by a thread, he would give it a go.
Hick pulled two sixes off Gillespie, and a four, in an over that was to cost 23, and at close of play on Sunday, had scored 42 runs, from 33 balls, in 52 mins, included 2 sixes and 4 fours.
Graeme Hick is the 24th player to score 100 100's, and only Sir Donald Bradman and Denis Compton have scored it in fewer innings, only Wally Hammond was younger, and then by only 12 days.

Hick scored two centuries (104 and 132) in the match, only the third occasion in his career he has managed that rare feat.
Hick's fine batting was not enough to earn him a recall to the England side, however, and it is now two seasons since he last represented England in a Test.
Hick's ambition now is to return to the England team as a number four or five batsman.

The Observer | Sport | Cricket: The big interview: Graeme Hick
Hick thinks it had a lot to do with the sort of person he is, the background he comes from.
Hick agrees there is little doubt he would have done better now with central contracts, a more competitive county championship, the academy, a sympathetic England coach in Duncan Fletcher (his captain in Zimbabwe's 1983 World Cup squad) - and no Ray Illingworth.
Hick, who had batted for nearly four-and-half hours, sees it this way: 'To say I was disappointed would be putting it very politely.

BBC ON THIS DAY | 6 | 1988: Hick makes cricketing history
Graeme Hick, Worcestershire's 21-year-old prodigy, has scored more than 400 runs in a county championship match - the highest innings in England this century.
Hick had to wait until 1991 before he was allowed to join the England team - and was widely regarded as its saviour.
Although Hick is still considered by many as one of the world's finest one-day batsman, his international performance never quite matched his county championship achievements - he was dropped several times from Test teams.

Hick given captain's role on his return
The alternative would be to go outside the touring party and pick either Hick, who was in excellent form yesterday (he was not beaten past his outside edge during his net, even when he used a practice bat of half the normal width), or else his Worcestershire team-mate Vikram Solanki.
While Hick was relaxed and confident, even expansive, both at nets and in his press briefings, he declined to explain his refusal to fly out as cover for Michael Vaughan when requested, as exclusively revealed in the Sunday Telegraph.
All that Hick would say was: "Grav [David Graveney] spoke to the three of us [Ramprakash, Nick Knight the official batsman on stand-by, and himself] and made his decision, that's all there is to it." There was rather more to it, but his appointment as captain has made it plain that bygones will remain so.

Sport | Interview - Graeme Hick
Graeme Hick has scored more than 37,000 runs in first-class cricket, made 126 centuries over 20 years, and has broken more records than there's space to list.
In the same interview, 11 months before England's unhappy World Cup campaign in South Africa, Hick argued that even if he was not worth a place in the Test squad, he should be in the one-day team where he had (almost) fulfilled his potential as batsman, bowler and extraordinary slip catcher.
Hick is painfully aware of how quiet he was in the England dressing room.

Exclusive: Hick refuses to fly to England's rescue
Hick declined to comment on his reasons for not wanting to go to South Africa until today, but it is understood that he wanted to spend Christmas with his family in Worcestershire after a busy benefit year.
The decision of the England tour management to send for Ramprakash, after Hick had withdrawn from the equation, was therefore greeted with some dismay in official quarters - until it became apparent that Fletcher had undertaken to use all his man-management skills to bring the talented but unfulfilled, and always intense, Ramprakash into line.
No doubt Hick has his reasons: he is in training for the one-day series which starts in mid-January but has not had the net-practice to be ready for a Test match; he has his young family, and wants to be with them at Christmas for a change.

But Hick blocked their path with a dominant run-a-ball-innings featuring eight sixes and 27 fours in the 15th double century of his career, as Worcestershire made 318 for six declared.

Hick believes England have suffered in past tournaments from throwing players in at the deep end with little limited-overs experience at international level.
Hick, who played 120 one-day internationals and 65 Tests, is confident England will be too strong for Sri Lanka in the forthcoming Test series and could even gain the upper hand in the one-dayers.
