South African cricket legend: Graeme Pollock   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-08)
Graeme Pollock, South African Cricket legend of the Century, retired as the second most successful Test Batsman ever with an average exceeding 60 runs.
Graeme, as he was known, was voted South Africa's Cricketer of the Century in 1999, to no-one's surprise but his own.
Graeme Pollock continued to play cricket until the 1986/87 season, ending his international career with a century, 144 against the rebel Australian team that toured South Africa during that year.

Graeme Pollock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Robert Graeme Pollock (born February 27, 1944, Durban, Natal) is one of South Africa's most famous cricketers.
Graeme Pollock is one of the greatest left-handed batsmen the world has ever seen and was chosen as South Africa's Cricketer of the 20th Century in 2000.
Pollock was an excellent judge of line and length and this enabled him to always get into the correct position to play any kind of delivery.

South Africa's Official Internet Gateway - Cricket: Shaun Pollock
Pollock returned for the one-dayers, but he failed to live up to his high standards, only twice making good inroads into the visitors' batting when he took 4 for 32 in the second ODI and when he claimed 3 for 28 in the final match, the only victory the Proteas enjoyed in a tough summer.
Pollock was relatively quiet in the first Test victory in Durban, but his performance in Cape Town included a swashbuckling 36 off only 19 deliveries with the bat, and 4 for 45 with the ball in Pakistan's first innings.
With Pollock to the fore, both as a leader, as one of the world’s leading fast bowlers, and as an underrated batsman, South Africa is in a position to continue challenging Australia as the world’s leading test-playing nation and to add further credence to their claim to be the world’s top limited overs team.

Wet-behind-the-ears Graeme Smith, not even in the original squad for the mega event and drafted in as a replacement when Jonty Rhodes got injured, has been surprisingly chosen as the man to lead the team's destiny for the time being at least.
The sacking of Graeme Pollock, who one always thought as a reactive captain rather than a proactive one, was expected after the team's debacle in the event in which they are the main hosts.
Pollock himself has gone on record to say he was not allowed to function independently as captain which looks suspiciously like a case of sour grapes.

 Cricket: Graeme Pollock - SouthAfrica.info
Graeme Pollock was voted South Africa’s Cricketer of the Century in 2000, and no one who saw him play would dispute the honour.
Sadly, Pollock was to play only one more test series before a ban on South Africa ended his international career, but in that series he played for a team that many regard as the best South African team of all time.
Considering that Pollock was just 26 years of age when his test career was brought to a premature end, it is a reasonable to infer that he would have improved his average.
