Maximilian von Spee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However Spee was wary of the Allies' strength, especially the Imperial Japanese Navy and the Royal Australian Navy — in fact he described the latter's flagship, the battlecruiser HMAS Australia, as being superior to his entire force by itself.
In the ensuing Battle of the Falkland Islands, Spee's flagship, SMS Scharnhorst, together with SMS Gneisenau, SMS Nürnberg and SMS Leipzig were all lost, together with some 2,200 German sailors, including Admiral von Spee and his two sons.
Coincidentally, the Admiral Graf Spee was sunk by the Royal Navy in 1939, off the coast of Uruguay only a few hundred miles from where von Spee and his squadron had met their end on the same month a quater century earlier.

Admiral Graf Spee - Operational History
Admiral Graf Spee was engaged in a battle off the coast of Uruguay with a small British naval group consisting of the heavy cruiser HMS Exeter and the light cruisers HMS Ajax and HMNZS Achilles.
Admiral Graf Spee was hit amidships and set on fire when subjected to heavy salvos from the light cruisers, but she laid another smoke screen and turned 130° to port to avoid torpedoes from Ajax loosed off at a range of 4,5 nautical miles.
At 1915 Admiral Graf Spee fired a few salvos at a range of 13 nautical miles to reinforce the message, by which time it was already clear that she would probably be running into a neutral River Plate port to effect repairs.

The armored cruisers Scharnhorst (named for the Napoleonic-era Prussian General Gerhard von Scharnhorst) and Gneisenau were the most powerful ships in the German Imperial Navy's East Asiatic Squadron stationed at Tsingtao, China.
Coronel was a Pyrrhic victory for Spee, who had expended 42 percent of his ships' 8-inch ammunition—Scharnhorst had fired 422 shells and had only 350 remaining—and the nearest supply was in Germany.
With inferior speed, range, and weight of shell, Spee's ships had little or no chance against Admiral Sir Frederick Doveton Sturdee's battlecruisers HMS Invincible and Inflexible.
