The shape is defined by a string of symbols constructed by a graftal grammar.
A graftal grammar consists of an alphabet (A character set that includes letters and is used to write a language) of symbols that can be used in the strings, a set of production rules which translate each symbol into a non-empty string of symbols, and an axiom from which to begin construction.
The graftal is built by recursively (additional info and facts about recursively) feeding the axiom through the production rules.

This graftal defining features are an ordered set of points which define its spine, and a corresponding array of scalars which define the width of the graftal at each point.
Each graftal has an associated scalar which represents the minimum distance the graftal point has to be in order for the graftal to be drawn.
Secondly, if the graftals were drawn when the object is far away, they could potentially bunch up and the result would not be pleasing.

Graftals are flat 3D meshes with a dark outline and a interior color matching the color of the procedural texture.
Specific type, shape and size of graftal is determined by type of texture, orientation of the face to the camera, disiatnce from camera, position on object, etc.
For animations, the positions of graftals drawn last frame are remembered, and are attempted to be drawn first, although they not always are.

Also, graftals were regenerated in each frame in a way that led to excessive introduction and elimination of graftals even for small changes in camera parameters.
Our new framework allows all major decisions about graftal look and behavior to be specified in a text file that can be edited by a designer.
We have achieved greater frameto- frame coherence by using graftals that remain in fixed positions on the model surface.

An example of a graftal is the Dragon Curve.

In [Kowalski1999], textures, called graftals, are procedurally drawn geometry attached to the model's surface.
Furthermore, graftals are drawn differently depending on view direction as illustrated in Figure 4.
For example, the animated graftals shown in the results section are implemented as a layer that animates its underlying graftal's normal.

 Talk:Graftal - TheBestLinks.com - L-system, Neologism, ...
I think the article's name should be graftal.
A graftal seems to be a very similar (maybe identical) concept to an L-system - although the stochastic and parametric variations may add some value.
I can find very few references to a graftal (and one was a copy of this article !) so I am not convinced that this term is in general use - but maybe it is a valid neologism.

Given a well-structured presentation, the user can easily browse very large numbers of samples - certainly in the hundreds and perhaps in the thousands or more.
This principle could be applied to a wide variety of problems in computer graphics, such as: parameter selection for fractal, graftal, and other generative modeling processes; specification of the reflective and textural properties of surfaces; the color and opacity attributes of volume data; motion synthesis for animation; and layout of 2D informational graphics.
Using this principle requires both the ability to sample a search space effectively, and some measure of perceptual relatedness that can be applied to the samples.
