The first settlement in Graham county was made May 18, 1872, by W. Ridgely, on the northeast section of the county, his nearest neighbor being at Logan, Kan., eight miles distant.

In the county the population was spread out with 22.50% under the age of 18, 5.30% from 18 to 24, 23.10% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 23.70% who were 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a household in the county was $31,286, and the median income for a family was $38,036.

Organized in 1880.  County seat Hill City.  In honor of Captain John L. Graham, of the Eighth Regiment, Kansas Infantry--killed in action at Chickamauga, Tenn., September 19, 1863, before he was mustered.
John L. Graham, Captain, 8th Kansas, for whom the county was named, was killed at the Civil War battle of Chickamauga.
Graham County is one of six counties in the Solomon Valley Highway 24 Heritage Alliance.

Between 1870 and 1880 was the period of the "Exodus" of fls from the deep south to the promised land of Kansas when their numbers in the state increased from 17,108 to 43,107 (Nicodemus, Kansas History).
The Graham County On-Line website indicates that the settlers lacked sufficient tools, seed and money, but they managed to survive the first winter by selling buffalo bones or working for the Kansas Pacific Railroad at Ellis, 35 miles away (Nicodemus).
