Graham Haynes - Biography - AOL Music
The son of drummer Roy Haynes, Graham Haynes grew up around jazz musicians; his Hollis, Queens, neighborhood was also home to Roy Eldridge, Milt Jackson, and Jaki Byard.
Haynes' work occasionally hints at an experimental nature, but too often he's apt to place his Miles-ian cornet in static, synthesized funk-oriented contexts that do not enhance or augment the essential lyricism of his work.
Haynes is obviously attracted to various world music traditions on records like 1994's The Griot's Footsteps.

Haynes conducted a full, thorough, wide-ranging, fair-minded, and absolutely superb review that carefully balanced the legal, technical, military, intelligence, and (not least) philosophical considerations involved in a brand-new form of conflict -- and did so in a way that was a credit to the nation he serves.
Jim Haynes is a Harvard Law grad who served five years in the Army (rank: Captain), clerked for a federal judge, served as General Counsel of the Army, and served as a top lawyer in several private sector positions before taking over as General Counsel for the whole Department of Defense.
With Graham, Haynes's longtime opponent, instead saying that he now considers Haynes a hero in the effort to balance security with American values, Democrats would be hard-pressed to find any other reason to kill the nomination.

Power Line: Jim Haynes and Lindsey Graham -- setting the record straight
For example, Graham reportedly is lobbying hard against Haynes with key gang of 14 members such as Senator Collins of Maine, trying to persuade them that the Haynes' nomination constitutes an "extraordinary circumstance" which would justify a filibuster.
Graham contends that the JAGs were not afforded meaningful process because they only saw a "draft" final report (March 2003) and not the "final" final report (April 2003).
Graham's suggestion that the JAGs were left out of the process because they only saw a draft of the final report, not the "final final" report, makes no sense.

Haynes has exhumed and updated European classics; turned dance beats into art and made art music danceable; and rescued, redefined and deconstructed that genre we still call "jazz".
Haynes enrolled in Queens College to extend his formal music studied, encouraged largely by members of the Rescue Church of Christ band.
It was collaborations like this and Haynes travel and work throughout Europe were he was able to weave together funk, jazz, African and Arabic music and a whole lot of Haynes imagination, often layered over complex rhythms in multiple time signatures which is what Haynes is known for in the music industry.

Roy Haynes - Drum Solo Artist
Roy Haynes was born in Boston, March 13, 1926, and was keenly interested in jazz ever since he can remember.
Roy's son Graham Haynes adds his distinctive sound on cornet and flugelhorn to the powerful front line.
As on his previous two recordings for Dreyfus (When It's Haynes, It Roars and Te Vou!), Praise refers to Haynes' glorious legacy while adhering firmly to his credo, "Now is the time." Within the imaginative arrangements, Haynes stamps his personality on each tune, intuitively designing rhythmic phrases like a great tap dancer.

Graham Haynes : BPM - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
On BPM (i.e.,"beats per minute"), Graham Haynes intermingles Miles-influenced horn lines, techno rhythms, world music grooves, ambient textures, and -- brace yourself -- samples of Wagnerian opera, with surprisingly successful results.
Haynes concentrates on his horn's middle register and seems to choose his phrases carefully, drawing out and clearly articulating the notes with nary a hint of vibrato.
Haynes uses technology to create imaginative and even subtle sonic environments, and, of course, he is an evocative player on his primary instrument, the good old-fashioned cornet.

Haynes had cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2004 (before the Abu Ghraib scandal hit the fan), but he was not approved by the full Senate before the end of the first Bush term.
The result, Graham told reporters after the hearing, was “legal confusion” that contributed to the scandal at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison — and the attendant courts-martial and other career damage for those held responsible.
With Democrats united against Haynes, Graham’s position is crucial because without his support Haynes could have a hard time getting out of the Judiciary Committee, which has 10 Republicans and nine Democrats.

Trumpeter Graham Haynes seems to have been eaten alive by the exotic creature known as ‘electronica’.
But even as experimental music (which is what it actually is), Haynes’ stab at electronica vanishes into the large, murky lagoon of this kind of stuff with nary a ripple.
Haynes’ brand of electronic music is not grating, though far from pleasant.

Where Miles Davis left off in the recording studio just before his death, cornetist Graham Haynes picks up, continuing to explore the controversial marriage between mainstream jazz and hip-hop rhythms.
Yet Haynes also has other fusions and revivals on his mind, sometimes reaching back to Miles' nearly forgotten mid-'70s "jungle band" for fuel.
Haynes even successfully revives one of Miles' least-imitated experiments, the wah-wah-pedal trumpet (or in this case, cornet), on "Mars Triangle Jupiter" and "Freestylin.'" ~ Richard S. Ginell, All Music Guide [-] Continue

Graham Haynes' view of the future is provocatively put forth on this mostly self-contained CD, where, with the exception of an African harp and a couple of spoken voices, the sounds are made up entirely of his cornet, flugelhorn, Tibetan trumpet, keyboards and racks of electronics.
It is a peaceful vision, bordering on new age at times but also with an element of darkness rarely heard in feel-good electronic mood music.
But Haynes, a cornetist and son of famous drummer Roy, seems to have anticipated that problem and avoided it by going for flavor rather than authenticity; the result is a wonderful disc that blurs the definit… Read More »
