CAP Article: A Palynological Entry to the Early Exploration History of the Sverdrup Islands with Special Attention to ...
Several presentations at last year's [1990] AASP annual meeting at Banff referred to the Cretaceous dinoflagellates from Graham Island which I was fortunate to study in the early 1960's together with the late Isabel Cookson (Manum and Cookson 1964).
The story of the Graham Island sample is part of the much grander story of the exploration of the Sverdrup Islands by a Norwegian expedition 1898-1902, and of the impressive contribution to Canadian geology made by the Norwegian geologist, Mr Per Schei.
Graham Island was reached on April 29th but bad weather prevented them from traversing the island until May 2nd.

Besides the island mentioned, there is a small one situated close to the north shore of the inlet--with only a canoe passage between--about a mile from the entrance, and a group of three islets opposite a high, perpendicular granite bluff near its head.
Opposite Barnaby Island, however, we were struck by a heavy squall, which swept our canoe over the surface of the water for more than 200 feet, and to within about twenty feet of a precipitous rocky shore, upon which the waves were dashing furiously, before we could recover the use of the oars.

This rare gouache painting illustrates the eruption which formed Graham island 50 km north of Pantelleria in 1831.
Because of its strategic importance, the new island was immediately claimed by Britain, Spain and Italy and many names were proposed -- Graham Island, Ferdinanda, Hotham, Corrao, Sciacca, Giulia and Nerita.
Sadly the island rapidly succumbed to erosion by waves.

He found that the island was in the form of a crater about eighty yards in diameter and rising to a maximum height of about twenty feet.
During the eruptions the crater was filled with a mass of hot cinders which was thrown some hundred feet into the air with a loud rumbling noise before falling back into the sea with an even louder noise due to the immense amount of steam produced.
Sights taken on the forenoon of 19 July determined the position of the new island as 27 miles from Sciacca in Sicily.

Beneath the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean--far from the eyes of visitors marveling at the majesty, or trembling at the destructive potential, of Mount Vesuvius and Mount Etna--Italian scientists are studying two less visible volcanoes that, while presenting no immediate danger, have generated considerable interest.
One of the more fascinating scenarios surrounding seamounts--dozens of which dot the floor of the Mediterranean--involves the possible re-emergence of Graham Island, which made its first recorded appearance in 10 B.C. and last rose from the sea between Sicily and Tunisia in July of 1831.
When Graham Island, as Britain calls the fickle seamount that last emerged from the water about 50 km south of the Sicilian seaport of Sciacca in 1831, its appearance was as much a political event as a geological one.

Tourists travelled to the island to see its two small lakes and four-kilometre circumference; hardy visitors climbed to its summit through clouds of noxious gas.
And meanwhile, the volcano called Ferdinandea or Graham bubbles away, causing eruptions and waves in the realm of hypothesis, while its mineral sands sprout with lush underwater plants.

On the downside, though, it drenches both sides of the island with endless rainstorms, even in summer.

Toarcian strata are widespread in the North American Cordillera, however the tectonic complexity of this area has, until now, prevented the construction of a regional ammonite zonation.
The Queen Charlotte Islands have yielded well preserved and abundant ammonites in a relatively uncomplicated tectonic setting, which has allowed the construction of a Toarcian ammonite zonation for North America (Jakobs 1992; Jakobs et al.
