The Beautification of Ugliness in Burne-Jones's Perseus Cycle
Despite the reputation for ugliness of the Graiae-sisters of Medusa supposedly born with grey hair and only a single eye and tooth among the three of them (www.encyclopedia.com)-Burne-Jones paints them in Perseus and the Graiae (1892) as lovely young maidens with dark hair piled upon their heads.
The viewer can only see one of the sisters' faces, since the other two have their backs facing outwards, yet this figure has smooth pale skin, a delicate nose and lips, and a somewhat typical, sharply defined Pre-Raphaelite chin, as in numerous Rossetti paintings.
The Graiae wear robes that drape over their youthful bodies in a schematized, rigid way that adds to the distinctive sense of movement in the painting.

 Danae
With the help of Athena and Hermes, Perseus sought first to find the Graiae, who would put him on the road to the Nymphs, who in turn kept the items he would require to dispose of Medusa.
The Graiae were three sisters, in the form of old women since their birth, who possessed a total of one eye and one tooth between them.
The Nymphs gave him a cap which would make him invisible, a pair of winged sandals so that he did not have to stand on the ground, and a magic bag into which he was to put Medusa's head.

This is probably the name given to the Greeks, on account of their fair complexion compared with the Asiatics and Africans.
"Keto bore to Phorcus the Graiae with fair cheeks, white from their birth, and hence they were called Graiae." The Greek word is rendered an old woman, and in this passage of Hesiod, is supposed to mean certain deities.
The probability is, that it is applied to an old woman, because she is gray.

 Medusa (Gorgons/Olympian gods)
Known Relatives: Phorcys (father), Ceto (mother), The Graiae (Deinos, Enyo, Pephredo, sisters), Stheno, Euryale (sisters, possibly deceased), Chrysaor (son), Pegasus (daughter, presumably), Orion (nephew), Callirhoe (daughter-in-law), Geryon (grandson, deceased), Echidna (granddaughter, deceased), Typhon (grandson-in-law),
This seems suspect and was likely added later to the myth as a convenience to make it that much more easier for Perseus to slay her.
Considering that the Graiae (also called the Gray Sisters) are sisters of the Gorgons and were also likely goddesses at one time as well, it is reasonable to speculate that they were also found at fault for the sins of their sisters.
