The agricultural drill is named for its special uses, e.g., the grass drill and the grain drill, or for its construction, as the disk drill and the hoe drill.
Hand-powered rotary driving devices include the hand drill, which has a crank that transmits turning power to the bit through a gear and pinion, and the bit brace, which is a bow-shaped device that is rotated to turn a bit.

Ohio Agronomy Guide, Small Grain Production
Grain drills should be adjusted to penetrate crop residue and place the seed one-inch deep and in good contact with the soil.
Most grain drills are available with an optional 10-inch row spacing that aids in residue movement through the drill when seeding no-till-making the effect of 10-inch row spacings on wheat yields of interest to producers.
If the grain is known to be free of the smuts (based on field inspection during production), then a seed treatment effective against the seed- and soil-borne diseases may be sufficient.

 DREC Cross-Slot Plot Drill
Most soils where the drill was operated required from 750 psi to 1000 psi in the hydraulic system to penetrate soil in grain fields.
The first strip was seeded with a Morris air drill with narrow hoe openers, the second strip was seeded with a John Deere 1895 air drill with single disc openers and the third strip was seeded with the Cross-Slot plot drill.
The objective of this project was to 1) develop a no-till demonstration/research plot drill specifically for North Dakota conditions, 2) demonstrate the capabilities of this no-till drill under a wide range of on-farm conditions, 3) use the drill to seed trials requiring no-till methods.

Once the desired seeding rate is calculated, the next step is to calibrate the seed drill so that it drops the right amount of seed.
The 1,000-kernel weight is measured simply by counting out 1,000 seeds of grain and obtaining the weight in grams.
Expected seed survival is the expected germination less a small amount for seedling mortality.

An alternative to planting the cover crop with a grain drill or broadcasting the seed, is to plant the cover crop in defined rows to match the row spacing of the spring planted crop.
Cover crops of winter wheat or winter rye can be seeded immediately after bean harvest with a grain drill, or seed can be spread with a fertilizer spreader and incorporated into the soil with a shallow tillage operation.

Rice Response to Planting Date Differs at Two Locations in Louisiana
Research was conducted from 1995 through 1997 at two locations in Louisiana to determine the number of days from seedling emergence to 50% panicle emergence and rough rice grain yield of the cultivars Bengal, Cypress, Jodon, and Kaybonnet when drill seeded at five dates ranging from late March through early June.
Data for Julian days required for 50% panicle emergence and rough rice grain yield were subjected to analysis of variance using a five (planting date) by four (cultivar) factorial treatment arrangement for each location.
Rough rice grain for the four cultivars for a given planting date was harvested on the same day when grain moisture was 20 to 25%.

AGR-33: Growing Red Clover in Kentucky
The clover seed may be sown with a grain drill with a small seeder attached, a band seeder, a corrugated roller seeder, a pasture renovator, or a cyclone-type seeder.
Good stands of clover may be difficult to obtain in dense small grain stands. Therefore, seeding rates should not be more than ¾ bushel per acre of wheat, barley, or rye, or 1½ bushels per acre of oats.
If red clover is seeded in small grain, it is best to remove the small grain straw before it starts to smother out the clover.

 Establishing Upland Sites
DRILL SEEDING: The drill seeder can be used for seeding various species of grasses and grain.
BROADCAST SEEDING: The broadcast spreader consists of a unit with a hopper for holding seed, fertilizer, pelletized limestone or other granular products and a mechanism which will spread the product uniformly over an area.
Hydroseeders can distribute this mixture up to 150 ft. or more, which allows for seeding on terrain which may not be accessible by other seeding methods such as steep slopes, roadside cuts or sites too wet for other methods.

 Small Grain Seeding Rates
Broadcast seeding often results in more uneven stands and lower yields than drilling.
For example, if a grower plants on time in 7-inch wide rows, an appropriate seeding rate would be 20 seeds per drill-row foot times 50 feet, which equals 1,000 seeds planted every 50 feet of row.
In conclusion, drill seedings required to achieve the correct wheat plant population vary widely between varieties and seed treatments.
