 Rykodisc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Claiming to be the first CD-only independent record label in the United States, Rykodisc was founded in 1983 or 1984[1] in Salem, Massachusetts, by Arthur Mann, Rob Simonds, Doug Lexa and Don Rose.
The word "ryko" means approximately "sound from a flash of light" in Japanese, a reference to their intention to concentrate on the then-new compact disc technology.
In 1999, Chris Blackwell left Island Records and bought Rykodisc for a reported $35 million as a means of acquiring music marketing and distribution expertise for his new venture, a media company called Palm Pictures.

 Hans Wendl - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He began his career in the music business with the record label ECM Records in his hometown of Munich in the mid-1970s and was associated with the German label for twelve years before moving to the United States in 1986.
He was also director of the Gramavision Records label for Rykodisc for three years during the mid-1990s.
Hans Wendl has produced the recordings of many notable jazz and world music artists, including Don Byron, Charlie Haden, Bill Frisell, Ravi Shankar, Anoushka Shankar, Peter Apfelbaum, Medeski Martin and Wood, and Tin Hat (formerly Tin Hat Trio).

Rangell's 1987 debut album was released on Gaia/Gramavision Records, but soon thereafter he was signed by Larry Rosen and Dave Grusin at GRP Records.
He has recorded with The Rippingtons, Chuck Loeb, Patti Austin, Tom Browne, and The GRP All Star Big Band and is featured on Don Grusin's Grammy-nominated CD The Hang.
Though Rangell has recorded mostly in the contemporary/pop and smooth jazz formats, The Times of London notes that "heard live a much more robust and idiosyncratic player emerges." In the late '90s, Rangell continued his career with Shanachie Records and has now released fourteen CDs nationally and internationally.

However, percussionist Daniel Sadownick supplements the overall proceeding via his shrewd employment of worldbeat and loosely structured accents while drummer Gene Lake and bassist Fima Ephron prove to be near perfect foils for the guitarist's emphatic lines, rippling harmonics, and enticingly unorthodox phraseology.
And while the Headless Torsos are not for the faint of heart, this recording dutifully highlights David Fiuczynski's distinct artistry.

Maybe because of that brewing identity crisis, the band aimed at something different on this album.
"Recording in New York gave us more time and space to experiment with fine tuning the details instead of relying exclusively on capturing what we do live.
In fact, while in the studio recording their latest album, the band improvised many of the songs from scratch or from skeletal ideas.

Pete's debut solo album for Gramavision, sparked by an assortment of soloists and sidemen who, like Pete, are all alumni of the Gil Evans Orchestra during the 70s and 80s.
It's refreshing to hear an instrumentalist who is schooled in jazz harmony and orchestration, because he knows so many more ways to solve the common compositional problems than the average bozo with a stack of synthesizers and a new-age record deal.

Compost recorded two albums for Columbia and their explosive live sets always concluded with lengthy double drum workouts by DeJohnette and Moses, as well as a "People Sandwitch".
From the early 80's through the mid-80's, he did some of his most important large ensemble works for Gramavision Records, recording When Elephants Dream of Music, Visit with the Great Spirit and the monumental double LP, The Story of Moses.
In July of 1998, Moses recorded Nishoma on Grapeshot Records, a jazz ballads or "heart songs" album dedicated to his extraordinary mother, Greta Moses (1917-1997), featuring Abbey Lincoln, Luciana Souza, Steve Kuhn, Chris Wood, and master tap-dancer Jimmy Slyde, among others.

Originally recorded in 1990 and released on Gramavision Records, this CD got extensive airplay during the 1990 holiday season, but had distribution problems and was difficult to find.
Gramavision folded a year later, and MASTERS became an unavailable collector's item.

In 2003 they released their first record, on Ropeadope, called, Come in Red Dog, This is Tango Leader", In October 2003 they tieled their collaboration "Groundtruther", and toured Europe with Greg Osby as their guest.
A new trilogy by Groundtruther, with three different guests, is being released by Thirsty Ear Records, titled "Latitude", (released, with Osby), "Longitude" (released, with DJ Logic),and "Altitude," (to be released November 2006, with DJ Olive).

Currently in addition to playing drums, Adrian is pursuing interests in production and cowriting with many different artists.He is working on a solo album on which he is the main song writer and plays most of the instruments, including guitar, bass, keys, drum programming, live drums and all vocals.
They also recorded an excellent 1996 live recording, released in Japan on VideoArtsMusic, and then took a four year hiatus.

This Gramavision debut reveals a subtle sense of orchestration, as several tracks are enhanced by the presence of the Groove Collective horn section and guitarist Mark Ribot.
Their second CD as a unit and debut for Gramavision grabs the groove, shaking and twisting and wringing out interesting, organic variations.

The Torsos, fronted by vocalist extraordinaire Dean Bowman, were chosen by Musician Magazine as one of the top ten bands of 1996, described as “brilliantly blend(ing) jazz knowhow with a love for heavy riffs”.
Fuze’s recordings are an experimental mix of tradition with modern sounds and rhythms, a melange of funk-rock jazz, ambient textural improvisations, world-music elements, metal, reggae, house, dub, drumandbass and other new grooves topped with Fuze's unique writing, extraordinary soundscapes and passionate soloing.
A recording of standards and covers written by Fuze’s idols and mentors, each tune was reworked in Fuze’s distinctive musical combinations.
