Among those named as defendants in the lawsuit are Horace A. Judson, Grambling State’s president; Sally Clausen, president of the University of Louisiana System; and E. Joseph Savoie, the state’s higher-education commissioner.
Earlier this year, a state audit found that the university appeared to have largely dealt with the fiscal and managerial problems that, at one point, left its books unauditable and led its accreditor to put it on probation (The Chronicle, March 27).

Grambling State University is a Division I-AA institution and a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
On February 15, 1996, an NCAA director of enforcement wrote the institution's director of athletics to arrange on-campus interviews with university student-athletes, administrators and athletics department personnel and to request various documents.
As required by NCAA legislation for any institution involved in a major infractions case, Grambling State University shall be subject to the provisions of NCAA Bylaw 19.6.2.3, concerning repeat violators, for a five-year period beginning on the effective date of the penalties in this case, June 2, 1997.
