IN THE PHILIPPINES, THE GENUS GRAMMATOPHYLLUM IS represented by two species, G. speciosum and G. scriptum, both of which appear to have numerous forms.
This group has a wide distribution throughout the islands of the Malaysian, Philippine and New Guinea areas and was probably first detected 'by the early naturalists Rumphus and Osbec during the middle of the eighteenth century, when they were traveling in the East Indies.
The bottom flowers are often incomplete and abnormal, lacking a labellum, petal, sepal, or column, and at times produce an organ which is a combination of two others, such as half a petal and half a labellum.

Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - Flowers of endangered orchid (grammatophyllum speciosum, sp) which is known as the largest one in the world are sold on the sides of some streets here, a report has said.
ANTARA News observed on Sunday that the flowers of the endangered orchid locally named `anggrek macan` or `anggrek harimau` are sold along with other ornament flowers notably on A Yani Street.
Literature on grammatophyllum speciousum, sp said an orchid plant could reach 15 feet high and the weight of a clump of orchid plants was once recorded to reach two tons.

My own experience with growing it in a basket was that it went backwards and died but I think that was more to do with where it was growing then with the basket.
I have Grammatophyllum stapellaeflorum which I nailed onto an old raintree log which is going great guns and is probably the way I will grow scriptum in the future.
