However, the Grammys, usually held in February, (last of what are considered the big three music awards shows, including the BMA and AMA shows) are considered the approximate equivalent to the Academy Award, in the music world.
Unlike the Academy Awards, for which the eligiblilty period begins January 1, the eligibility period for the Grammys begins October 1, which results in September being considered the Christmas sales period for the music industry (in which artists generally release big albums to qualify for the next years Grammy).
So, for example, John Lennon & Yoko Onos album Double Fantasy was released in November, 1980 in music, a month-and-a-half too late to qualify for the 1981 Grammys, and thus eligible for the 1982 awards (it eventually won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year).

George Graham Reviews Keb' Mo's "Slow Down"
The result is another fine album that is not exactly blues in the pure, traditional sense, but which does incorporate acoustic blues styles in a mix that once again runs from rock to easy-going pop songs.
A couple of notable fellow contemporary blues performers, Colin Linden and fellow New Orleans resident Anders Osborne put in guest appearances, and in the case of Osborne, collaborate in the songwriting.
But typical of major-label albums, the recording was compressed too much in the mastering process, taking away some of the dynamics that the acoustic instrumentation can afford.

Steve Earle - Transcendental Blues (Album Review)
He just released Transcendental Blues, his fifth album in as many years, and though it follows the same genre-jumping flight path as his 1997 release El Corazon, the new album is far more cohesive, carrying a gracefully thematic storyline.
Earle's songs are timeless as they majestically dance their way through folk, blues, and bluegrass styles, while emoting his pain and anguish with resolute conviction.
The result is a perfect blend of rock, outlaw country, blues, pop, folk, psychedelia, and bluegrass that serves as the fitting framework for Earle's deeply personal lyrics.
