Grammy Award - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike the Academy Awards, for which the eligiblilty period begins January 1, the eligibility period for the Grammys begins October 1, which results in September being considered the Christmas sales period for the music industry (in which artists generally release big albums to qualify for the next year's Grammy).
So, for example, John Lennon and Yoko Ono's album Double Fantasy was released in November, 1980, a month-and-a-half too late to qualify for the 1981 Grammys, and thus eligible for the 1982 awards (it eventually won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year).
Christopher Cross (Grammy Awards of 1981) and Norah Jones (Grammy Awards of 2003) are the only artists to receive the "Big Four" (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist) in a single ceremony.

In fact, there's nary an album of the year nominee who was alive when the Beatles called it quits in 1970, let alone when they first arrived on American shores 40 years ago.
As O'Neil sees it, the problem is the Grammys' "stubborn reliance" on a system that mostly pays attention to "favorites from the Top 40, not the best music." Despite numerous telephone calls and e-mails, NARAS representatives could not be reached for comment.
If there is a problem with the Grammys, it's the emphasis "focused on a small sliver of what's taking place in terms of who gets nominated," says Dave Samuels, a past Grammy winner and a nominee for best Latin jazz album tonight for "Birds of a Feather" with his group, Caribbean Jazz Project.

Polka king Jimmy Sturr is to his style of music what Garth Brooks is to country--far from a founding father, but the most popular contemporary exponent of the genre, responsible for bringing large numbers of new listeners into the fold.
Instead, Sturr and his band of polka vets turn out straight-ahead polka as it has been presented for decades.
Guest musicians from the distantly polka-related worlds of country and Tex-Mex add a bit of spice, but even when the Oak Ridge Boys' vocal harmonies and Flaco Jimenez' accordion are absent and Sturr's band is making it's way through a joyous, two-stepping instrumental, there's an undeniable effervescence in the air.

But "slowing down" has been happening only in the tempos of the polkas the band currently performs, an adjustment made to accommodate the many new (and hard-core) polka fans gained since Brave Combo's Grammy recognition.
The Grammy award was an unexpected surprise, after the band's previous two nominations, Polkas for a Gloomy World (1995) and Polka Party With Brave Combo (1998), didn't take the prize.

Polka CD Reviews by Nostradamus -- The Polka Page
One website called them "German folk-punk with polka and gypsy stylings." They've also been described as "polka-thrash" or "Hard polka." In any event, you'll hear allusions to Arthur Brown, Rednex, Those Darn Accordions, the Doors, Enigma, Love, and much more, but the final product is pure Shanes and it's a feast for the ears.
Their latest album, Polka Can't Die, has several clever originals and some fine guitar work by Dandy Don, but I don't find the unrelenting sound of a power trio (Shite'n'Onions called them a "Chicago-based punk polka band w/Ramones overtones") keeps my interest for very long.
Their polka version of "Purple Haze" is extraordinary (it's also on the American Polka compilation) but the rest of the album is less satisfying.

While their track record is pretty good in the early years, you may notice that many of the later recipients have all but vanished from the music scene.
Apparently not, since the category has been dominated by a single performer since they started awarding it in 1985 (a year that I, for one, do not associate with a big resurgence in the polka world, though perhaps I missed it).
After all, the last time I checked, the polka section of the local record store was one thin section of one bin, and most of those were old.
