  Grammy Award
Grammy Awards, presented by the Recording Academy (an association of Americans professionally involved in the recorded music industry) for outstanding achievements in musical recordings, is one of four major music awards shows held annually (the others being the Billboard Music Awards, the American Music Awards, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony).
However, the Grammys (usually held in February as the last of the "big three" music awards shows--the others being the BMAs and the AMAs) is the approximate equivalent, in the music world, to the Oscarss.
The awards are named for the trophy given for them, a small gilded statuette of a gramophone.

An IK! Grammy Memory - February, 1982
John Lennon's and Yoko Ono's "Double Fantasy" was awarded a Grammy as the album of the year Wednesday night, providing one of the most dramatic moments in the 24-year history of the record industry competition.
As soon as the award was announced in the nationally televised ceremony, Ono - whose presence was a surprise to the capacity crowd - walked to the stage with the couple's son, Sean.
Although Lennon won six Grammy awards for his work with the Beatles, his highly acclaimed solo albums were snubbed during the 1970s by the 5,000 Grammy voters.

 47th Grammy Awards
If you've been listening for the story of this year's Grammy Awards, then chances are you've been hearing the beat of the street: Nominees for the 47th annual Grammys, to be presented Sunday at Staples Center in Los Angeles, reflect a decidedly urban flava.
Awards in about 95 categories will be doled out during a pretelecast ceremony that commences at 1:30 p.m.
The same sentimental tide that fueled those awards probably spurred seven noms this year for the late Ray Charles: The American icon's final duets album, the Concord release "Genius Loves Company," has become his greatest commercial triumph, and the Oscar juggernaut that is Universal's Charles biopic "Ray" should help his Grammy chances immeasurably.

The Grammy Award is presented by the Recording Academy, an association of Americans professionally involved in the recorded music industry, for outstanding achievements in musical recordings.
Like the Oscars, the Grammies, currently with a total of 101 categories within 28 fields of music (such as pop, gospel, rap), are voted by peers - in this case voting members of the Recording Academy.
The Grammy voters tend to be elderly, musically conservative, and are heavily marketed to by record companies, who place great stock in some types of artists winning Grammys (accurately but cynically put as those which sell to "teenage girls and housewives").

Once The Beatles won three awards for Anthology (having won as many or less Grammys during their ENTIRE 64-70 run!) and Santana won about ten billion in one show...it became evident that the committee was backtracking to cover up what it feels its past mistakes were.
The 2001 Grammys when Gladys Knight won her only solo grammy award for "At Last", which really wasn't a good album, but had some nice cuts on it, won, and they showed a 16 sec clip of her as they went to commercial because that part of the ceremony was not in the show.
The Grammys have always had a reputation for embarrassing themselves with their nominations, but I think they sunk to a new low this year when Nelly's "Nellyville" got nominated for Album of The Year.

 Definition of Grammy award
Some feel that because Grammy voters tend to vote conservatively, and are marketed to by record companies (viewed as pushing artists that sell to "teenage girls and housewives"), the most widely-recognized Grammys tend to go to either well-established artists or those being hyped by the recording industry.
Unlike the Academy Awards, for which the eligiblilty period begins January 1, the eligibility period for the Grammys begins October 1, which results in September being considered the Christmas sales period for the music industry (in which artists generally release big albums to qualify for the next year's Grammy).
So, for example, John Lennon and Yoko Ono's album Double Fantasy was released in November, 1980, a month-and-a-half too late to qualify for the 1981 Grammys, and thus eligible for the 1982 awards (it eventually won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year).
